Im looking for the help of a DMOZ editor is one is available and has the time. I submitted a site back in Jan 08 , and resubmitted again a few hours ago. Would somebody whom is a dmoz editor kindly take a few minutes and provide me with a status update ? Atleast that way ill know whether its still being reviewed or unnaccepted etc. Thanks in advance
Isn't this setting a dangerous precident if an editor helps? Imagine the opening of the floodgates! I have sites I would love to know the status of as well, but I do understand why the status reports at RZ were stopped.
As Secret Squirrel . status updates are discontinued for the reason , it does not best utilize a volunteers time probably . Check more details in http://www.resource-zone.com/forum/showthread.php?t=39116
Coincidentally, ptisouthwest has already posted in Resource-Zone and been given precisely the same answer and link.
Yes i had already posted in the dmoz forum . Since DMOZ were not any help I thought I may ask some of the editors whom lurk on this forum. There is nothing wrong in that approach. My post was an ask , thats all so no need to get in a tizzle about it.
I seem to recall see a post from an editor somewhere asking why do people want to know the status and it went something like: It waiting to be reviewed and there is nothing more you can do. Its been moved by an editor and there is nothing more you can do. Its listed and there is nothing more you can do. Its been rejected and there is nothing more you can do. ie knowing the status changes nothing.
Yeah its definitely better to go there and end up getting yourself completely banned. That being said, its an RZ policy to not give out status checks its not a DMOZ rule. If an editor wants to give a status check here and its allowed by DP, then there is no problem that I am aware of with doing so. As you can see though, most editors believe that its pointless to provide status checks anywhere because there isn't anything positive that would come from it. You can always ask, but don't be surprised if no one responds.
It is also pointless for most editors to come here and repeat DMOZ "official" nonsense but it seems it never stops them from doing it.
Hey gworld, if I offer to bribe a DMOZ editor and get banned, can I sue you for the bad advice? If I get listed, what is your paypal address for a reward?
I'm not a DMOZ editor, but I will say that enough decades have not passed for your site to be reviewed. If you are lucky, your great, great grandchildren may get the approval. This is assuming your E-mail address and Website still resolve and have been given to them in a will. Seriously, there are people waiting for years. Six months is too soon to get concerned IMO. DMOZ gets lots of submissions. Good luck with your efforts though...
Say, of the 25,000+ edits I've done, I can't remember being thanked even one time, and I didn't expect to be, . But now, after 6 years, I've sorta lost interest in spending my free time building categories. The mom & pop outfits I was interested in helping have been overtaken by all you commercial interests looking to make a quick, easy buck. Kind of sickening really. Whatever happened to hard work and producing something worthwhile with your own two hands? Instead of riding somebodys coattails. A website should be just one of many tools a real business uses, not the beginning and end of it. Real businesses understand what I'm talking about. They depend on themselves for success, not a Directory. It's pretty sad if that's what you depend on. It means you have nothing substantial, just wild hopes.
Exactly. Editors are not dependant on submissions from the public, they are perfectly capable of finding good sites on their own.
Most of the editors I've talked to, would quit, even if paid listings were sanctified by the Directory itself, so any kind of suggestion like that is way off in left field I think. I suppose you do get creeps like that popping up occassionally, but they get whacked pretty fast. Getting paid for listing sites would take all the fun and freedom out of it. Dang, you get paid, you got a boss and you got a customer, both of them usually bitch at you, you lose your freedom to work when and where you want to. Hell, most of us already have that in RL, why would we want our hobby to become a job? Maybe some of you greedy ones would like that, seein as most of your cyber businesses are big flops that need Directory assistance to survive, but the rest of us already earn honest livings, .
I believe that what you did is right. Just make a good website, submit it to dmoz (a correct category) and forget it. You may try to resubmit it after a few months.
hahaha - great thread Now let's pretend.... I'm the editor of a small, insignificant cat - just one. Maybe even been for years. And let's pretend - even I can't get a listing for a website in a different category! Even the cops give a professional courtesy once in awhile.... Just pretending of course.... L2
