Weeks ago, site-sift directories include mine were hacked. It makes me decide to change the script and was hesitating among a few script like phpld, phplynx and others. I own several other directories mostly phpld3.0 which I like very much. Since phplynx staff offers a free service to convert the script completely (I don't have much knowledge on php), I decide to have a taste of phplynx and bought a paid version. My experience so far: As an encrypted script, it is not as easy as phpld to make change and add mods. There are fewer templates on the internet at this moment. There are some good things like it incoporates deep links and business location options. I would like to report more when I have more experience on phplynx. My directory: www.thenextlink.com and advices welcomed. Thanks.
I think many of us will look forward to your comments regarding this script. The more information out there for us directory owners to evaluate the better. From what I see from a brief look at the site, the template is clean and moving from category to category loads quickly. Good luck with your directory! Edit: I found a listing in your directory and the title wraps to the next line which makes it difficult to read. You may want to consider limiting the number of characters submitters are permitted. I have the same problem in phpLD for articles. Please note I use 800x600 resolution. On the same page, the alt text for "refer link" and "report link," reads cantufind. You may want to customize that part.
I agree with snow and I am also anxious to hear some more reviews on it. If you feel like guest posting at my directory I would be thrilled.
Powered by phpLynx courtesy of the Cantufind Network .. so the script makes you link back to two sites? Anyways, I would love to know more about this script and get feedback (genuine) from all its users.
I'll be having fun this summer with phplynx Many reviews will be coming your way Its certainly an incredible script and when released in open source will be great to play with.
Also hoping for some guest post from you mikey. I consider your opinions valued and it is no doubt your a strong force in the directory industry and anytime you feel like you have topic you would like to post on Lobo Links, let me know.
Do a search through all the template files, you will find a tremendous amount of references to Cantufind in the alt text - you should remove all of these and replace it with something appropriate to your site.
I agree with you YMC there is a lot of reference to Cantufind in the Default template, Once xc06 changes the template these references will disappear. I assume they are there because the template was designed by the Cantufind Network. If you check the link in my signature, you will see another phplynx full version install, this site is owned by Gary one of the developers of phplynx. Thanks aubenrey
One backlink to the script should be enough I guess. Two backlinks surely makes me not look into the script. I hope the developers take a note of this.
I don't know about phpLD as I haven't used it but eSyndicat's templates had a bit of this as well. But, I thought that with Lynx being so heavily promoted as a tool for beginners the volume of these references was extreme as there was much more of this than there was with the ES templates. Every time I thought I had found them all, I still found more. And trust me, I really redid the templates. It would have been much more impressive had the script designers put something like "your alt text here" or something that did not come across as an attempt at free advertising at the directory owner's expense. I thought it was something that they would have fixed by now.
In a perfect world I would agree with you, but then again the template would have lots of "your text here" alt tags within it, there really isnt a good solution to this type of issue, users very rarely go in and edit the template files to suit there needs. I dont see it as an error, so why fix it? The only way I can see that will not give this situation is supply the script (which ever script) with a blank, no graphics, alt text or anything so the user has to go in and edit the files before opening his / her site. Similar to what phpld did, the template was so basic you had to change it. At least the phplynx guys tried to supply a decent template within the script rather then a crappy default basic template. Each to thier own I guess, its not that difficult to search for the alt Text and automatically replace them in all the files, there are quite a few programs which will do this for you in a fraction of the time. Thanks aubenrey
We appreciate all feedback and the more that comes the better placed we will be able to fix things. The "alt" attribute is nothing that can't be changed in seconds and they were only left there as examples. As for the comment on two backlinks, we always encourage people to remove them even if it is for a small fee. Let's not forget this is a high end product at a low end cost a couple of linkbacks are a small price to sacrifice if it means saving on real money. Thanks for the feedback everybody.
you only fix ERRORS, this isn't an error. Wasn't you a moderator at one time over with phpLynx? I would have thought someone as astute as you would have pointed this one out, can't see where though. Never mind, its done now. Thanks for your input. Edited to show gratitude to YMC for offering advice.
Gee, Jamie, perhaps you have forgotten that the moderators were asked not to publicly discuss the bugs and other issues that could reflect negatively on the script. Something I don't think your competitor's moderators are restricted from doing. You're right though, this is not an error but it certainly is not customer/user-friendly.
YMC, your (rather sadly in my books) trying to make something out of nothing, its an 'alt' tag that should be removed when coding. The default template is not there for people to use as a rule, its there merely as a stopgap until the buyer has made a template, any template designer worth thier salt would instantly recognised the need to change the alt tages and amend accordingly. I think your more than aware of that though. I won't go into what comments or contributions you made as a moderator (I just read your entire file) as I don't wish to paint you in a light others haven't seen you in. Closure on that one might be the order of the day. As for bugs, to my knowledge there are none now, and haven't been for a long time, one thing you cannot deny is that when a bug, whether by you or another, was reported it wasn't dealt with very quickly, argue that and I'll prove you wrong.
If you had truly wanted to have an alt text that functioned as a "stopgap" it would have certainly made more sense to use the sitename variable instead of that bit of self-promotion. Instead you did something that 100% of your customers should change. Once again instead of having a rational discussion about your product, you have turned this into something much less constructive.
YMC I've just read your posts on the phpLynx moderators forum, and also been reliably informed by Gary that you were well aware the script was initially made for cantufind.com and not for public release, hence the alt tags, which are not the big deal your rather poorly trying to make out they are. Due to circumstances I'm not prepared to go into here, perhaps your not the best one to comment on phpLynx because it would beg the question as to why if they bother you so much now why you never picked up on this when as a moderator you had the opportunity? If you do have something constructive to comment on then please feel free, if not then don't.
