Mellowhost crash nightmare: just lost all my databases, forums & blogs!!

I woke up this morning to a COMPLETE NIGHTMARE. MELLOW HOST LOST ALL MY DATA! ALL MY SITES ARE GONE!!

We got an email this morning saying they had some 'journal crash' that corrupted all their onsite harddrives.

You'd think they have some backups. But apparently all the MySQL was 'onsite' and they couldn't recover anything except for the public_html on an offsite server. This means they have lost ALL the MySQL databases for anyone that was hosting with them.

And trusting them, I don't have daily MySQL databases set to automatic. I know I should have manually backed up my databases more often but I literally launched 2 sites in the last week, built them up to a healthy size and BAM, this happened. Unbelievable.

I make my bread and butter from my online businesses and now, I've lost hundreds of members and thousands of posts and content and modifications have disappeared that I've spent loads of money on. And I doubt that Mellow would be compensating anything. I swapped from HostGator to try them and gave as much faith as I can, but this may be the last straw.

Now they say all they can restore is my public_html so we'll see what they can recover.

Is anyone else in the same boat? Plan of action?

Unfortunately most hosts and I assume Mellow Host would be in that boat have clauses in their terms of service that states they are not responsible for money lost due to using their service. You'll also find no host guarantees data is backed up in their terms however they state otherwise on their site. Most however do backups the terms just protect them from corrupted backups and things of that nature.

So I would chalk this up with a lesson learned. No matter whom the host is always make sure to make frequent backups.

I'm in the same boat you are as well. I have accounts with a few other hosting services so I'm ok. I learned never to put all my eggs in one basket so to speak but where I'm in trouble is all my clients i had on on mellowhost lost all THEIR stuff too, and that makes ME look bad and my reputation is sure to suffer because of it. -.-

To top it up, they had the AUDACITY to tell me that if it was important to me I should have backed it up. In addition to the downtime I was experiencing in the last week (downtime IMO = the site can't be accessed for WHATEVER reason) - they had to correct that I didn't understand the technical terms and downtime means whatever else it means and they only were down for '33 minutes in the last 25 days'. Bulls***

I am pretty angry right now, because all my online income due to their errors have been terminated. They claim to be able to restore 'public_html' but I don't see what use that is, wehn I'm running forums and blogs.

I do have a couple of older backups. But the worse is I launched 2 big ventures in the last 3 days, one of them was growing and now everyone is wondering what's happened. Plus we had a couple of very high PR5 sites that we've built up over the last month worth over $1000 each easily.

I am trying my best not to be too reactive to this but their claims of the 'backup of mysql' is 'onsite' - are they saying both the original and backups have failed, or that they don't have any backed up in the first instance.

So what are you guys doing? Moving hosts? Any recommendations? I should've never swapped from hostgator. I also heard that A simple orange is really good. I'll never use dodgy hosting like this again.

i will probably have to do ALL my sites again from scratch. this really sucks. i have spent probably in excess of $2500 to develop some of the mods and custom work on some of the sites i've put in probably more than 500 hours. So for them to say 'sorry mate but you should have backed up' is a pretty big insult

i also agree that the past couple of months they've really sucked. i felt uncomfortable approaching their support. was made to feel like it was my fault - 'because of mods u made' etc when i was referring to a down site from a simple fantasitico install of a forum and the site would be down half the time.

Can anyone suggest if ASO is better than HostGator? I would like to retain some of the WHM features if possible, as I have over 30 domains hosted with namecheap. I've used dream host (slow), hostgator (pretty reliable but I remember some functions which I didn't like too much) and now this mellow crap.

I've heard great things about ASO, but wonder if they support multiple domains etc?

Always best to actually ask the host so going on their site using their live chat or emailing them. Asking around here is just asking from misinformed bias responses.

I was able to find the answer by using their site:

    "Unlimited Parked and Addon Domains"

I assume that's what you're after unless you're looking for a reseller based account so you can create separate cPanel accounts.

if its so important, with 500 hours of work, why don't you keep a backup yourself. Not very smart

oh yeah that's it. the addon/parked domain thing is why i left hostgator. otherwise they were brilliant. some people seem to recommned dreamhost but IMO they are too slow, unless some changes have been made in the last year i won't use them again. plus their cpanels are a bit weird with the CGI stuff.

Anyway I appreciate that lots of you are host providers and that you guys aren't using this to hard sell your own services. But I urgently need a replacement host in the next couple of days that can make my transition as easy as possible (and not have to swap again...)

I'm looking for (superb uptime, very fast servers for both media + content, mostly blogs + forums, multiple cpanels, up to date fantastic (SMF 1.15, latest wordpress etc) reliable support etc then do make some suggestions. I don't think these are really that high demands...

The moral here, always backup your own data. Read your hosts TOS/AUP. That said, you should also consider hosting your sites at more than one facility. Don't rely solely on your host for you redundancy and reliability. Anything can happen.

    YMMV.
