Regarding certain search engines

I was wondering are sites like torrentz.com needed to have overseas hosting since they link to torrent files on OTHER web sites? Or sites that is a search engine and search for warez?

I have read some articles about someone hosting video sites in the US and linking to other sites that had the video streaming and got sent to court because of it.

Not really. There is a difference between Torrentz.com and sites like Mininova, or The Pirate Bay.

Torrentz.com only spiders and links to the websites who host the actual torrent files (again, mininova, etc.). Many hosts don't even allow linking to the sites, but there are on-shore hosts that allow you to. As far as I'm concern, there is nothing illegal about it since you're not hosting anything. If you get sent to court, you have a case.

TPB, etc., however, are another story. Because they are actually hosting the torrent on their site, they are forced to operate off shore.

Yeah TBP has their servers in Sweden I believe. But when I am on torrentz.com I see they have no google ads, so I am assuming google does not allow ads on a site like this.

Would it be smart to have them on a gateway page and have the user click Enter or Exit and then once they are in the site have no ads?

Actually, I think TPB managed to moved their servers to a private man-made "island" (called "Sealand")

    (off topic:

    off topic)

And no, Adsense doesn't allow ads on such sites. But they also don't allow ads on proxies, etc.

You know, adsense is not the only advertising platform. For everything else, I recommend Adbrite.

Adsense aren't allowed on proxies? Then why do so many people do it with the possibility of getting banned? I was planning on making a proxy site in a few weeks, but if I can't use adsense then I wont bother. I guess I could use adbrite on the torrent searcher and proxy site, but idk. I just think adsense pays the highest and all that. And Adbrite you have to wait 2 month for payment, right?

Wait... I think you can use adsense on the actual proxy site, but not on the hidden web page.

I'm not sure, but I think I've read somewhere about adsense not allowed in proxies.

Anyways, I don't have a proxy myself, so you should probably go to the adsense section and ask over there.

I don't know how much you have to wait for adbrite, but I do find them easier to use, and they have much more advertising options, like full page ads, etc.

You should always experiment to find which one works best. I know it might be frustrating at times, since you could lose a few bucks, but finding the perfect one is crucial.
