I'm thinking of switching hosts to HostGator. Does anyone here have any feedback on this host, either positive or negative?
Tech support answers the phone and is generally knowledgable. I had one account removed from their shared hosting because of resource usage so they do watch for that. The price is right.. no setup fee and you only have to pay monthly. They get a thumbs up from me (coupon code in sig as well).
I use them for a couple of clients. They have great uptime and use the same data centre as my dedicated server so I know it is good. No complaints from me. I highly recommend them.
I use HostGator. Have been using them since January. Great host with excellent support, and a price you can't refuse. You can't go wrong with Host Gator IMO. I host over 50 domains with them. They are just simply great. Downtime is minimal...maybe an hour per month at the MOST ever. That was once.
are you kidding? hostgator is not perfect but can please state why you say that $7.00 a month for 50 gig BW for single domain hosting seems pretty reasonable
My only experience is negative. I signed up for a dedicated server (a good one) and it said it would be setup in 3 days. After those three days past I called them up to find out they never did start setting it up and it would take another 3 days (which I didnt have) so I cancelled the order. But they were very sorry and promised me if I wanted to keep the order they would have it up in 24 hours but I couldnt wait that long. So its negative and somewhat positive.
I'm concerned about the CPU/mySQL usage comment. My sites run all kinds of applications (Joomla, WordPress, etc) that rely on mySQL. Should I be worried? Or are we talking about site that receive thousands of hits per day?
I have to hand it to HostGator when I did get the boot for overuse of resources; they did something I did not expect. They sent an email notifying me of the overuse and then they moved the site to a temporary VPS account. They said I had a VPS account for one week, no extra charge, while deciding what I wanted to do with the site. The site in question does about 7500 page views/day (as well as serving external data to other sites-- probably the reason) and is mySQL driven however not optimized at all. I've had other hosts (*cough ASO cough*) who simply suspend the account and wait for you to respond. That got me mad enough not to use ASO again.
well there might be isuses then Cache everything you can, i use the pear cache module for most db sites, or sites that get lots of xml data And to be really safe, get a reseller account, in general if something happens to an add on domain ususally just that account is suspended, but if you get a reseller account if one of your domains is problem you know that definelty only that account would be suspended. Hostgator sells tons of hosting, if you go shared then you will be on sever with a lot of other people, so if one of scripts is messed up and it starts effecting everyone they will suspend that domain. But you can call thier support, you can im them or file a ticket and get response pretty fast.
The only real compliant I have had about hostgator. I did get one bad tech who suspended a shared account with like 20 addon domains, because of comprimised script on one of the addon domains, but that seems to be the exception. I have had problems on other shared accounts and no one else did that.
Have been using over 4 months and they have excelent service. I transfered all my domains to them from registerfly (which really sucks). Hostgator is recommended!!!
Has anyone here had any experience transferring a database driven app from another host? I currently host 10 domains with a host that provides cPanel access. I'm hoping I can just perform a full backup, and do a restore to HostGator. Any thoughts?
hostgator is good. I have been using them for almost 5 months. No downtime experienced though. REcommended!!!
