DMOZ -- What's the big deal about it?

I keep reading that being listed in the DMOZ is one of the best things you can do to increase your ranking in the search engines

    Is this true?

I submitted my site to them about a month ago... however its still not listed.... any idea how long it takes to get listed?

    Thanks!

it can take a few hours to a few years. if you followed the guidelines when listing your site, you have done all you can. forget about DMOZ for awhile.

A lot of other directories clone DMOZ so usually a listing amounts to more than one link on more than one site.

A listing in DMOZ is an authoritative link as well. Can be good for SERP rankings when used with other SEO.

I'm not agree with that Dmoz is one of the best thing.......
Before some times it have great value of there links and google is also like it but now it don't have that value. I'm not saying it doesn't make any different, It make different in you ranking but it will be little bit.

Yes, a listing in Dmoz can help you a little bit in the eyes of Google.
A listing in Dmoz can take months to years as it is maintained by volunteers.
Just submit in Dmoz and forget. That's what you can do about it now-a-days.

Basically follow what nelisx said because its a long time coming. Once it is live though I reckon that It gets spread across the web. I know Google Directory Is DMOZ (although as to how frequant it updates is questionable) there are many others I have come across just cant think of them at the mo

There's a big deal about it because only quality submissions are accepted that pass DMOZ's relatively strict guidelines. Therefore search engines can only assume that a link from DMOZ is fairly quality.

It doesn't have such huge importance, don't be upset if you're noted listed at all. If you don't know the editor personally, or bribed someone, you will highly unlikely get listed anyway, that's how it works(%90).
