It has something to do with google's SERP criteria. And since we don't know everything about it, we can't tell for sure.
Usually the main site and subdomain are closely related, google seems to always represent the main page, unless the subdomain have different topic/keyword. The result is internal to google algo.
If I would for example add a news section, or a webforum to my website. Could I beter do http://www.domain.com/news or use a subdomain like http://news.domain.com ?
