Hello guys I need some ideas, I have 3 old computers that are in great condition that I need to find a good use for them, I have a few ideas but I am looking for more, people tell me to sell them or throw them away, but I do not want to do that so here are a few ideas that I have for them. 1. Make a FTP server to store and share files (remote file transfers, backups etc etc etc) 2. Make a picture frame with one of the computers, store all of my pictures and keep that pc on all day with it rotating my favorite photos. 3. Use it as a virtual aquarium (with paid or free aquarium software) All right guys, so what should I do with this PC's, give me some more ideas
I would suggest you need to evaluate the performance versus the power consumption. Nowadays energy prices is going through the roof, you need to consider that putting the computers 24/7 serving the web can incurred quite a bit of money which may not be worth it.
I am not really worried about the cost of the energy, I just want to find a good use for those computers.
No not really. they are so cheap this days that everyone has one, I already have an idea for one of them, I am going to store all of my pictures and I will use free software to display them in full screen mode to make it look like a photo frame, I will added to the network so I can easily transfer new pictures to it from my other computers this way I can see new pictures every time I look at that monitor.
4. Sell it on Ebay I saw some really really bad laptops going for like 50$ (I am talking about 16mb of ram) and they were getting bids! Just today...
donate them to a cash-strapped socially-oriented organization or local charity or something. there's always people who could use a pc for at least word processing and/or email.
See if a local school could use them, if you don't want them sitting around. Also, check out the local http://freecycle.org group in your area - someone always needs a computer and can't afford it.
If you really don't care about power consumption, make it into a server. You can then access your files from the internet and your media from any computer on the house. Put some other machines on a television or two running a form of a MythTV frontend and you won't be sorry. You might be out a few bucks for a video card if needed, but they are pretty cool otherwise.
I used to have a old pc i use them as backup just in case my new pc broke down i am still be able to do my work
Well, I don't know much about your country but here in our country, there are a lot of people or students in public schools who would really want to get their hands on computers. Being in a poor country, there are still a lot of public schools who does not have any computer. So if you could find a place in your country that practically has the same dilema with ours, it would be a good thing to donate them for better use.
