Depends on the type of software your using to write the article. not everyone has MS office. Or their machines cant run Open Office (which is free btw) But yes for you, that method would be easier.

While attending school, I remember an early version of Microsoft Word packed with a two-hundred pages printed manual and a shortcut key quick reference guide. Or newer versions don't include such files in electronic format or I have never paid attention to find them out or read the pamphlet inside the box.
I use ALT+T+W for open office. Another great application for word count and SO MUCH MORE is dupefreepro
