Optigold ISP Dead? Enough Users To Justify A New Development Effort?

Discussion in 'Optigold ISP' started by MarkK, Aug 26, 2007.

It seems that there are a lot of users out there. We would like to use the product as well, but can not buy it. I have seen the posts regarding the continued viability of the product.

I have a code shop and I would be interested in knowing how many potentials would be interested in a replacement on par with redesigned OptiGold ISP.

Assuming it does not run with FileMaker... We need something stable..

My previous ban got lifted ;)

Shawn has said before (have have the posts to the old opti list) that he would release it to public domain if his company went under. He has the $ to fight any lawsuit's though. The RIAA tried to fine him over filesharing a year or more back.. That is still in litigation as far as I know.. He wouldn't pay a $1000 fine.

Shawn is the only one that can do anything with the current code. Alternative billing software is out there. I have 1 in mind we have been working with exclusively.

I'm going to approach them with a competitive upgrade type of price offering for former opti users..

Please pm me if you are interested or email me at

I guess you have to define what "going under" means.. does it mean, going out of business, or simply stopping development.. Whatever it is, it would be nice if the code was released into the community so we can continue to develop it, and move it away from FM..

    Jer,

Thats part of the problem. Even if the company is still up and running, that doesn't mean that its a valid product anymore. Valid products get support.. Where is ours?

True, but to Shawn's credit, if the product is not the primary source of income anymore, I guess I cannot blame him for spending his time elsewhere...

All I'd like is to see it EOL'd and released to opensource..

    Honestly Jer,

Because Shawn makes more money doing something else, you don't blame him for not supporting a product that people have invested thousands in?

This is the guy that began development of Optigold using a new platform 2 YEARS ago.

I can't believe that after all this time people are still asking if Optigold is dead or not. I can understand loyalty and giving OG a chance but at this point its absurd.

Our 6,000 license copy is just sitting on our server... we moved on long ago... i suggest that if your business depends on it, that you find something else...

    Regards,

I think a lot of this stems from the fact that it is...

    1. Still actively marketed and sold
    2. The web site still exists
    3. You can still buy licenses
    4. Licenses, software and support are still being sold
    5. The forum still exists
    6. No official word of an EOL has been given on the product
    7. The company still seems to be incorporated and doing business
    8. Many still use it

    Hope this helps...

I would disagree with you on some of your points. We needed help changing some of the license stuff and I spent 1 month trying to contact them. Multiple email and voicemails... never heard back from them. From reading some of the posts in the forum, I would guess i'm not the only one.

Yes, development has been less than stellar, if not non-existent, along with support, etc... However, my point was that regardless of those facts, the product is not dead until it is EOL'd...

It'd be nice to have the source released so we can get some small improvements made, particularly in the area of allowing PayPal and CC processing to co-exist without having to turn off CC verification.. That is just one small thing that is needed, among many...

Personally, wouldn't something like WHMCS solve this?

Export raw data should do the trick.

I work for a WISP, and the company president has asked me to look into other options for billing and tech support products. Has anyone had experience with ispeasy? And does anyone have other alternatives that are viable?

    Thanks,

    Kev

Yea that ISPeasy looks nice, although it doesn't sound like it runs on linux (preferable), and I'm not quite sure what based on the filemaker pro engine means.

Based on Filemaker Pro means, that FMP is the backend DB.. Basically, it means it will be SLOW!!!! And unreliable..

I don't think it is dead, but it is for sure that not a lot of people know about it nowadays. This might, however, be a result of the fact that webmasters nowadays are used to getting free/ready-made interfaces.

What is needed is a release of the source!!! That would greatly help those of us dependent on it.
