Hi. I run a number of websites and someone told me I would be better off using a VPS. But am not totally sure what this is, and how it works? Can someone explain, and let me know where I find one. Cheers
Hello, VPS is virtual private server. It's very similar to normal hosting. But you have root access and you run the server. Vps can provide you better preformance of the server - more hits, BW, more unique visitors,... overall is better to have VPS for many sites. You can find nice stable VPSs over here http://eurosrv.com/ They have nice support too, so ask anything you want and you will get answer. cheers
VPS is the same with dedicated server. If you can manage a dedicated server, you might have good result with VPS. If not, and you still want to have a VPS, you will need someone else to manage it for you
I assume you have some high resource usage sites, thats why your host told you to move from shared hosting to vps. Goto the webhosting section for some cheap vps packages http://forums.digitalpoint.com/forumdisplay.php?f=98
Yes you will have more freedom, and flexibility with a vps. You can find many offers as qualityhostings as suggested at the webhosting section. We have a sale going on here as well http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=876331
Yes you can't beat a VPS for price and performance if your sites are suited for them. What kind of bandwidth usage are you using? Your best bet might be a dedicated. If you expect a lot of growth and traffic from your sites and can afford a ded server then get one. Dedicated servers are great!
VPS and Dedicated server, will we manage ourself? If we dont have much traffic, vps isn't good because u have to prevent the hackers. is it right?
Is there a reason why this "someone" told you it would be better? are you having issues with your current host? don't see any reason to get a dedicated or VPS sever on this thread, maybe if you could give us some reasons to get a VPS then we could let you know if it would be a good idea.
I think there's no reason to look for VPS or dedicated server unless your website is starting to get popular and shared hosting cannot cut it.
It depends on web hosting company. Some allow that, some don't. But of course you'll get a control panel with your VPS (lxadmin is usually a standard, or you can pay an additional fee and get cpanel) where you can create new accounts for other people to host their website.
You can get both unmanaged and fully managed, but yes fully managed VPS's will cost slightly more. One of the best fully managed VPS's providers in the industry is www.wiredtree.com they take care of all the server hardening, they have pro-active monitoring on their VPS's, a solid network and support tickets are dealt with in under 15 minutes. If you have never administered a VPS or Dedicated before, i'd strongly recommend going managed at first.
VPS are a lot safer as you are in a "virtual container". for example, if another VPS on the same server as you is being attacked, you will likely not to be affected. This is just the power of virtualization. VPS are highly recommended over shared/reseller accounts. You can easily find some for just the same price!
