I started a business and learned the hard way. LOL... First rules of thumb.
    1. Learn your keyboard shortcuts. This helps to get around PS and to learn the tool pallette.
    2. Always create new layers(layer>new) when you add elements to your document.
    3. Do the same as number two when you make adjustments to photos. This way you don't damage the actual image. Working with adjustment layers vs directly on the image is called "non destructive image editing"

It helps to simply just dive in and try to do some typographical stuff in and around some shapes. Sooner than later you will want to do something specific, at which point you can find great tutorials on the web.

    Here are some good ones

    http://www.tutorialized.com/tutorials/Photoshop/1
    http://www.photoshoproadmap.com/Photoshop-tutorials
    http://www.pegaweb.com/tutorials/web-design-and-adobe-photoshop-tutorials.htm

There are hundreds of these sites.
For quick, professional, Photoshop instructional videos check out Lynda.com they have top notch vids pretty cheap. Anyone can follow these videos.

My biggest piece of advice would be to simply hop in there and go crazy. What you intend on doing with photoshop will usually dictate your course of learning once you get some basics down. Meaning... print, web, or photographic stuff.

hope that helps, if you have any specific questions feel free to let me know and good luck! Its pretty fun actually.

I learned by just playing around - starting way back in 1994. It wasn't until about 1999 or so that I started getting serious and began using it every day for work. Since then, I probably spend about 8-10 hours a day in Photoshop.

Long story short - the best way to learn is to jump in and start using it on a consistent basis.

I learned it the hard way, messing with it. :D

I took no courses or classes but I just kept messing with layers, shapes, styles, trying various things, and seriously the outcome can be amazing if you free your imagination. Sometimes I think photoshop skills are not 100% practical subject that you need to learn until you master it. I think it involves a fair percentage of your personal creativity and imagination not just how many classes you take or how many books you read.

I mean; that you can simply visit a tutorial that teaches you how to make a web2.0 logo and give it a mirror effect, but if you have not got any creativity you will stop there. free imagination will allow you to the same effect in different ways, adding shapes to it, and so much more.

    Hey,

It is not that hard to learn photoshop for me.You just need to *play* with it
everyday,I'm pretty sure you will get problems when you want to achiever
something using photoshop. But that's the good thing, because whenever
the problem occur, go to photoshop tutorial site on the net.I'm sure
you can find great one on the internet.

I don't buy any photoshop ebook,or books, or tutorial etc.Because photoshop
kind to evolve every year.More advance features will be added. So the best
thing to cope with this, is to see or learn from the internet because you can
get very updated info about photoshop.

So DO NOT BUY ANY TUTORIAL RELATED TO PHOTOSHOP.It will waste your
    time.

I think a big part of it was that I was 13 when I started and had a lot of time on my hands so I could play around with it. Then I grew up, and 7 years later all I can do are projects for money...

I was lucky enough to be taught by one of the best Lolaness Designs :)

I have since tried to learn something new every week via the online tutorials and help sites :)

I would be lost without Photoshop now :)

well, i took a multimedia class in college but they never taught me how to use photoshop LOL! my BF is a designer and he taught me the basics. When you manage to get all the basics, the rest are all easy to learn.

My wife (then girlfriend) was a graphic designer when I was 14. At her house I sat in front of her PowerMAC and started playing with Photoshop 3.1. Picked it up pretty quickly and started working for her.

Here I am 14 years later and still open it every morning :)
