Please allow me to explain something, im replying to the OP with what appears to me to be a beginner, i would be disappointed with myself if i told him/her to go spending more than they need to during the experimental stage, that way the loss is kept minimal if the person chooses not to proceed shortly afterwards.

Hostgator has never been slow for me, now i say that it will most likely mess up for me, but i feel if just starting out then the person needs to experiment without throwing money away.

I intend to upgrade to VPS in the near future, because of overall plans accross a number of my sites that makes sense for me to do that and onwards from that il go dedicated too with the plans in mind.

Ive not had problems with my host yet because i dont run anything intensive in the directories, and submitters have never complained, and i often check if things are still working ok,

If the host cant cope with the pressure from a website its not the hosts problem, its the site owners responsibility to upgrade accordingly, hence your upgrading to a more suitable hosting environment.

Resulting in my future intention to go VPS and Dedicated as i understand that shared just wouldn't do for what i have in mind.

I agree VPS and dedicated can be affordable, i had a good recommendation for VPS from someone.

Regarding free and not working well :) i say Wordpress :) not hardware of course but free and works oh so sweet.

My mobile phone was free (bought for me) and ive not changed it for 4 years, keeps on working while everyone i know has problems with their new phones.

    @ PlateFish

My suggestion would be to turn SEO friendly URL's on. Most of the directories being announced these days don't have them on, and I can't begin to explain the value of having keywords in a URL (it's SEO 101).

Aye, that's why I have snapped up "free-links.org" ... Now if I could just get my damn head around starting up this directory then I can get on with building backlinks etc...

If anyone has any good guides to creating your directory then please do help. I'm using PHPlinkdirectory and the guide there really isn't doin much for me. I've spent the last hour uploaded all the files I need.

I might be easier for you to purchase a directory website allready set-up then transfer it to your domain. It would be a lot easier but might cost a bit more as some webmasters put a lot of value on traffic!

Well if you've uploaded everything does that mean you've installed it too?

I've uploaded everything but then the guide tells me to go to www.mysite.com/install or something silly like that... Nothing happens o/c.

I don't get it, how can I install something to my site www.free-links.org when I haven't done anything to say that I actually own that domain ... I'm really confused.

Is there a point to the directory other than the name, ? as you seem to have no other plans or knowledge.

It's a directory... I plan on practicing my marketing skills and earning some ad cash on the side. If you must know.

Also. My FTP doesn't allow me to change permissions on the files I upload which is apparently what you need to do to install the directory...

    Free hosting....what do you expect?

    Go buy some hosting
    Get your nameservers from them
Set your domain to point to the nameservers which you were given

Then you will see your site.

Well lets hope your marketing skills are better than your manners. Do some searches and gain some knowledge before racing out the blocks. Who do you think will attract with a name like that and the current inteded set up ?

auto submitters, directory submission services and spam, it is also well known that none of these will use or rarley use any ads on the site. and it will more than likley turn into a complete waste of your time for little reward as it stands but it's your time.

or with some time maybe sit back learn and listen, you maybe might even turn it into a good earner and directory, but i see your in a hurry so i wont hold you up.

    goodluck with your project.

Thanks for the help everyone but I ended up paying for the directory to be set up. I'm not too keen on spending hours uploading files to find out nothing actually happens.

I guess I can live with free hosting for a while. Me and my business partner need to get some new hosting soon anyway so I'll just dump it on that.

www.free-links.org will attract a lot of spams and bots but I will have the time to filter the spam and to market the site and hopefully end up getting a top quality directory.

Not at all Platefish. With our free script you don't need to spend a single penny. It has all the features of most paid versions already built in. I'd concede to there not being many templates out for phpLynx, well not for the free version anyway but in all honesty that's a good thing as it avoids duplication. If you ever wanted to upgrade then you could and our support team would help you on that score free of charge.

Some are well intentioned regarding the suggestions of making your own script, my view on that is don't re-invent the wheel, there is simply no need to. Good luck whatever path you choose.

Thanks JamieG but I already paid for phpld to set up my directory for me. Really not sure when I'm supposed to hear back from them though, they've kinda left me in the dark.

Why dont you host it where your poker forum is hosted, and wouldn't cheap paid hosting at less than a fiver cost less than paying someone to install it for you?

I saw that after I had posted. Sorry to hear you feel you've been left in the dark, that would not happen with us. Good luck.

Currently using my friends host which is why me and my partner need to get a new one. Costs $20 for the guy to set it up for me.

I've just thought of some great ideas for my directory site. How much do programmers cost to hire for some fairly basic stuff? And please recommend someone if you guys have anyone reliable and trustworthy.
