There are automated spammer sites that generate content for every url. This may be Google's way of identifying them. Another reason may be verification of site for Google Webmaster tools.

yes all this is, is google hunting for spam

there are tools that will make webpages on the fly tailored to whatever search string is used to get to the pages

    Hello
I do not think that this would be an easy way for google to find spam. The chances to randomly hit a generated page name are near zero and also note how much time google will loose to try all possible combinations.
I guess this is related to something else.

allancass: the idea is not finding spam pages by randomly guessing the correct page. A spam site will often return a similar page no matter what the request is - for example, test.org/index.html and test.org/randomstring.html will return the same page.

Yes good point, but what if you have put a custom 404 error page or maybe you redirect all missing page requests to your homepage via modrewrite? That will put you in the wrong category for google?

Yep, I've been getting weird hits too to web pages that do not even exist on my web site. Reading this thread makes sense.
