I always wondered this, and since there's a lot of Indians here, thought I'd ask their view on the matter. Why is this deemed as racism:- If you are from Pakistan, you are Pakistani - everyone agree? Yes. If you are a Pakistani, you will collectively be known as Paki's. Correct? This is deemed racist. Yet, if you are from Britain, you are British, or a 'Briton' (singular). Correct? And if you are a Briton, then you individually are a Brit. Why isn't this deemed racist? This world's a strange place.
I guess its more like a choice people like as to be heard. If Pakistani folks does not like to be called as Paki we should not call them, from my point of view. Its like how people pronounce a name. In USA we have lot of foreigners, with pronunciations really difficult. When we tell anybodies name we wanna make sure we are pronouncing it right; asking them if we are doing it right.
yeah we brits call ourselves brits as a means of being lazy, but pakistanis dont like being referred to as pakis thus its racist.
Personally I would never deem it as being racist, but it is how people perceive it that is the problem. For that reason only, I would never use the world. I don't like being called a Brit actually, I am English.
I think Pakistani is the used term, or Pakistani's for plural. It's more they way people use the word "Paki" that I think is the racist part to it. I agree with Benjaminp though, I'm not a Brit, i'm a Scot, and proud of it.
I'm pretty sure I heard of somebody being decapitated for making a remark like that some time ago. (No, not years, but decades/centuries). Though I must agree, I'm all for Independence once again.
If I'm not mistaken Paki sounds a little similar to an Indian's dirty word because I personally live in a place with quite some Indians. Quote my post Indians
I thought the collective term was Pakistani's and not Paki? That's what Bernard Manning called them once on the Parkinson show on BBC.
I agree... listen to this, this is no word of a lie, but the kids in the schools in Britain are being taught "Baa, Baa, Rainbow Sheep" or something along them lines because "Baa, Baa, Black Sheep" is racist. Same with it's not a blackboard, it's a chalk board... yet a white board is still a white board. It's not a black bag, it's a bin liner. I think the world is too PC!
as brit is short for britsh not english, scottish or welsh or irland. so buy calling pakistani a paki, you are singleing out one race that is why it is pc to call them asians, as asia is there nation. That the way i see it anyways.
Pakistani isn't a race. The hierarchy is Middle Eastern, which is their race. Races are like; White/Caucasion, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, Asian, etc...
I'm glad you made this thread. I have often wondered this. British people often use "Paki" as a way of describing Asians as a whole. Even other coloured people too.
