Not actually, the last Olympics China had a fantastic performance, now being on home ground. I expect them to be a threat to Russia and USA.

Let's all hope that the athletes stay safe, no matter what the political situation may be.

no doubt, they always have a good showing. I wonder if the non-winning Chinese athletes get punished  or looked down upon

that's the most important thing right there! :)

Here's hoping that the Olympics will be safe. I've been following the gymnastics try-outs since they started a few days ago and I heard that the Chinese government is taking all possible measures to make the athletes feel secure. Is it true that there are certain countries who backed out, though?

I don't think any countries will back out because of political reasons, one factor is the Chinese is now one strong power to be reckon with. I do not think any countries would want to offend it, though there are some minor acts of protest for eg boycotting of the Flame ceremony, I doubt that there will be any full scale boycotts.

Where politics failed, the environment might succeed. Hopefully the Chinese with their massive manpower at their disposal may have the ability to clear such mess. Pity it is algae and not those black moss which is considered a delicacy by the Chinese. If these bloom, I guess it would definitely be clear in the wink of an eye :)
