I've chosen a new theme on my forum now, but am unsure on one thing. How do I get the mods to work with the new theme?

    :)

I have this problem as well.

I think you have to rewrite the template code, which adds the mods in or something like that.

when you install a mod, it works fine with the default theme. when your using a custom theme, you have to edit a few files in order for it to work properly, something i have done many times.

if you need mod installation, gimme a shout. heres my profile at smf.

each mod comes with an install file which specifically tells you where to place what code in what file. its tedious but works. take your time and go through it for your theme files, be sure to back up the files you edit just in case.

In theory I know how to edit the themes to make the mods work, but many of the themes doesn't have all the files the mods mentions...? I read that if the theme of your choice doesn't have the file, the file from the default theme will be used, but it didn't work for me.

Is there a special trick to it? I went step by step on the files that the theme had, but there were a couple of files the themes didn't have.

I would like to learn this myself, so I don't have to hire someone each time I want to start a new forum, or update the theme.

are you getting an error when you try to install the mod?
if so a previous mod is causing the error and you'll have to edit that theme file as well.

SMF 2.3 Automatically apply packages to every theme.

So i assume your using the 1.1.x branch. Simply go to SMF modification site, and select manual integration, you will then see how to modify the other themes based off the differences it shows on the main template.
