    Hello,

OK, i obvously need to convert my images on my site (i am using BMPs!), but im not sure wether i should use JPEG or GIF..i know that JPEG is smaller, but GIF uses 256 colors, does that mean gif will load faster even though it is larger?

    please help me decide!
    thanks

Gifs are definitely better, they look way better. And if you are talking about the images for like the template of your site, then yeah, GIF's, just use good CSS. But if your talking about images like for posts on your blog, or for a gallery, then JPEG

I find that using .PNG is the best way to get top quality for the smallest file size but you sometimes need to use .GIF files as well, I find .JPG to be a lot more flexable but you also sacrific a lot of the quality.

    Not true.

Jpegs often look better than gifs.

It'd depend on what it's for the format to use. If it's got any transparency, then gif. If not then i'd probably go for a jpeg out of them 2 formats.

Anything will load faster than those 75kB bmps. Since they're continuous tone, use jpg. A gif would cause loss of detail. Read the ref I gave you.

May I suggest using IrfanView. Free program that you can use to convert images.
    http://www.irfanview.com/

You can set the "quality" of gif and jpeg conversions. And, obviously, the the higher the quality the larger the file size. Play around with that and find the right combination for your site.

Sometimes. It depends on the content of the image. If it's got lots of in depth colours then often they can have lower file sizes than a gif.

    I recommend .PNG...

But if I must choose, I choose JPEG between those two :)

Why PNG? Besides its large file size, IE doesn't correctly render it's colors.

loads faster doesnt mean better, quality should play a bigger role in the decision.
