I knew it was going to happen.
before all this, I noticed the servers having just a complete meltdown. every page took 3 hours to load on here. I think shawns servers got flouded with way to much traffic or something, then finally gave out.

    Your welcome. :)

It would be really good link bait right now to make a story up about how The Planet was lying for the purpose of link bait.

They might take legal action against you though.

That was actually my idea after your first post ;) I think I will give it a miss though, I can't afford anyone else trying to sue me this month.

A DoS does not cause a server to be reachable and a database to not be reachable...

was down for 12 hours at my end :D I went out side... :p I heard DP and some other major sites went on a all nighter(clubbing) and thus they all got bad hangovers the next day, which in turn caused loss of data.

What if the database server was the target of the DoS attack?

IMO it would be crazy to host your database separate from your web server.

Indeed it can. It's all about the type of the attack and where the attack is targeted to.

Almost every large site I can think of splits their database server off from their web server. I expect a database the size of DP is split across several database servers and kept in sync (well, most of the time)

Ok, I guess I am not being clear enough... By split the db from the web server, I did not mean the physical server, but the geographic location.

Let's think about this for a second. If the web server was say in San Diego, and the DB server was in Houston, then yes, the planet could be to blame... But, again, I think you would have to be crazy to separate a web server from a db server by thousands of miles, and different networks...

Lets now assume it was a DoS... That DoS, it would stand to reason would affect more than just the DB server itself. Given that all the servers appear to be at the same physical location, it seems highly unlikely there was a DoS to blame, especially since Digital Point was still online.

Finally, the most obvious and telling reason why this was not a DoS is the fact that the error message show below is generated by the server/VB software when the web server cannot communicate with the DB. If there was a DoS you would not see the database error message. You would more than likely experience a total time out, or a site unreachable message.

I'm not saying it was about The Planet or something but talking in general; that completely is up to the power of the attack. I'm pretty experienced with DDoS, botnet and stuff. The biggest webmaster forum of Turkey which I administrate gets gigabits of botnet attacks every day, so you can count on me about this.

    Turkish web master boards r10?

They are fools I know one of the Russian guy who attacks in patterns of sequences over their with botnet..

The power of the attack is not important after a while. With the fire burners you could stop the attacks partially. And with the software you could auto ban useless ip bots. I'm not very informative about this but. I used to have a boy friend working at Burstnet.

It could be a number of things. No, you wouldn't host your database on a seperate network, that'd be crazy (and slow). All I am saying is that a DoS attack could have targeted the database server and that died first, not every server on the network. I am not familiar with how/when vBulletin displays the database problem page.

My guess is that it was a routine database restart (or maintenance) due to the speed of the site over the past few days and they simply had trouble getting it all back running / syncd again. Although, with that said, if I were the owner I'd simply blame The Planet anyway :)

I just remembered when The Planet took over EV1 and I kept asking the EV1 support if they were... "Taking over The Planet" ha ha.

Yes, r10. We've tried almost everything but after some time we start getting millions of bytes of DDoS per second. There is really nothing you can do about it after a while other than disconnecting the server, unless you have over $100k to spend into firewalls and such. Only if they were brave enough to face me in reality..

No, you wouldn't host your database on a separate network, that'd be crazy (and slow).

Matrix Grid computing , clustering ? I have over 100.000+ active users on my whole network(different niches) I use separate servers for Database inquiry why say that ? Grid computing is much more effective i believe.
