I'm just raising an eyebrow at the submitting to directories - unless you're talking about yahoo or dmoz, there aren't many that have a high enough pr themselves to get you from a 0 to a 5, even if you submit to hundreds of them

Point #2 (good content) is of supreme importance, and not just for the purposes of getting backlinks. Getting a PR7 backlink to your home page might help you get a PR5. But the ultimate goal is to have some "meat" on our websites that is helpful to our sites' visitors. Otherwise, I personally wouldn't bother going through all the hard work to have a website.

Well I m not happy about it,
but you can have 2000 links, and still have PR 3 while another guy with 15 links gets a 7 PR link in ODP making his site PR 6.

Keep this in mind: you may get some great backlinks and boost your PR to 4 or 5. But if people arrive at your site and find minimal, meaningless, or poorly written content, they are bye-bye. And all your backlinking efforts will have led to an 80-90% bounce rate and an average of less than a minute's stay on your website.

On the other hand, if your write excellent content for the benefit of your readers, then do reasonably decent SEO in the other areas, you will have a website with a nice low bounce rate and an average of multiple minutes (not seconds) spent by visitors on your site. BTW, you can check your bounce rate and time spent on-site per visitor in your free Google Analytics account.

I think common sense comes with age; just like a fine wine. :) I wish I could +REP this but I must spread more before giving Jim4767 more reputation. :(

It took my site (which is a quite authoritative site) years to get to PR5. That was years of creating backlinks and whatnot. Pretty daunting task to get there in 6 months, if you ask me.

I disagree. Having many links from high-PR, aged, reputable sources can turn a new site into a PageRank monster more quickly than you might expect.

I don't worry about PR, I just worry about numbers of visitors and correlating these to sales. This is the only numbers games I'm interested in for my sites.

How about these case. If the site built for backlink not for visitor. I mean I boost a site to pr5 and put backlink to my main biz site. Yes, my main biz site have good content, but site made for backlink has NOT. Am I right?

I recently had a site go from PR N/A to PR6 in about 4 weeks, and it only had 7 backlinks.

It doesn't mean the site is good or gets a flood of traffic all of a sudden, and the only time that PR6 becomes meaningful to me is if i decide to sell links on it.

Actually it's quite worrying people constantly wanting to increase Pagerank, but nobody ever asks meaningful questions like "How can i increase my Pageviews from 1.5 to 3.5 per visitor"

More valuable/attractive pages on your website, different sections, etc.
