Cost Comparison of Tax Software for U.S. Tax Payers.

    Has anyone tried TaxAct? Is it really free or is there some catch?

    After becoming disenchanted with the very high cost of TurboTax and TaxCut software and the unexplainable $20 per e-File pop for Federal and State returns, I did a search and found TaxAct. Web reviews on TaxAct are great and the cost is LOW. For personal tax submission, the Web interface works fine and the total cost was about $16. This is less than one forth of the rip-off software packages. Pays to shop around. PS, with TaxAct you can only import last year data from TaxAct. They do offer data storage for about $5 for three ears. Thanks

    TaxAct worked fine for me and the total cost for State and Fed was about $16. Their add is honest...you get Fed for free but pay for State and State eFile. For personal tax prep, I think it's the way to go.

    You should not pay more then $30 to file your tax return using any software

    So, that's two votes for TaxAct then. Importing data from last year is a nice feature to have indeed... Has anyone found TaxAct to have any features left out that they can't live without? $16 is quite a bit cheaper than Turbo Tax which can cost as much at $75 for the full featured version.
