Yes, they're both right. By starting on on-page optimization, you can go to off-page. If the site is new, then your first priority is to get it indexed by SEs. I suggest submitting them to social bookmarking sites can help :)

I've done ecommerce optimization for a site that has over 118k products

The short of it is to make sure you have a search engine sitemap for every product detail page. Remember to break the sitemap up everytime you surpass 50k urls per the protocol agreed to by the engines.

Figure for each level deep into the site, it will take that long for the engines to rank the page. So if your detail page is something like:

site.com/product/category/detailpage.htm, you should expect to see that product in the top 30 SERPS (if it's not a competitive phrase) in 3 months.

    Hope this helps

You can start getting some really good traffic and rankings within a week, eCommerce are probably my most favorite sites to optimize.

Just make sure you work with your server data, and extract the keywords that are sending you traffic. This is vital information, use it and let your visitors tell you what types of things are being searched instead of optimizing pages for what you think is best.

Also do lots of internal linking between related products, it's not only good for bots but also sales. Optimize your cart and make it simple but functional, you want to make it easy for people to spend money. ;)

I could write a book on eCommerce SEO.

I make more keeping my tricks under my hat then i would selling an ebook, besides it would probably end up in the BST section being hocked for $5 by someone with 0 iTrader claiming it's theirs. :D

Dans post on Sitepoint is like a condensed ebook, and it covers a good 90% of Wordpress Optimization. So that one is plenty for most webmasters to get their blog SEO'd without hacking core files and that sort of thing.

It's well worth the read if you haven't taken a look.

Edit: Hehe Dan you read my mind 60 seconds before i posted. ;)

Actually sweetfunny, the WordPress SEO Checklist is being rewritten, updated, and revised and will be published on a site that will offer a truly optimized WordPress Theme framework for download.

The documentation for the Theme framework is proving to be a real PITA though - especially given that 99% of people who use CSS are nowhere near as good with it as I am (some people have even said I'm a lot better than Eric Meyer - which I don't know whether to take as a compliment or as an insult to the Godfather of CSS).
