Hi, my little cousin (he is 7 years old) wants to join martial art club. There are some option we have here :
    - Karate
    - Tai Chi Kung Fu
    - Judo
    - Jujitsu
    - Kenpo
    - Tae Kwon Do
    - Silat

I need to know what you guys think about this option. If you already joined one of the style, please tell us your experience.

    Thank you.

at 7 years i think the biggest issue should be the kid's safety. so no grappling/wrestling--rules out judo, jujitsu and silat. of the remaining choices the ones most modernized and well-adapted to suit kids i think are the usual karate and tkd.

when he grows up tell him to study something really useful like jujitsu or krav maga. :)

Karate, tai chi, judo and tae kwon-do is good. For Jujitsu and silat is not necessary as Jujitsu is fatal and silat is not that effective.

Lefty is right, for a kid, id say tkd and karate are best.

I have been doing tkd for 5 years, and its great.

Yes, actually I see silat has too many dance but not powerful. Jujitsu is fatal? Can you explain more about the word fatal here?

Wow, five years doing tkd, it must be a pleasure for you if we ask your help to kick some DP scammer's ass, LOL!
Tkd has style. I like it. Btw, do you think it's a good idea to join two different class at the same time? Just in case he wants to do that during holiday..

Anything but TaiChi, I cana't imagine such a young kid having the patience of learning TaiChi, Karate seems to be a better option, easily learned and applied.

Not: Tai Chi . That's more internal and unless the kid is very patience and doesn't want to learn more applicable self defense until he's about 19 . I wouldn't recommend it.

Judo wouldn't be bad as long as the club caters for younger kids.

Jujitsu is probably not right for a kid that young, it teaches a lot of lethal techniques and I doubt you'd find a class willing to take on such a young kid.

Silat incorporates sticks and striking, I don't think this would be right either. It's a good martial art but if you want your cousin to get the most out of it. They again probably wouldn't teach him some of the techniques because of his age.

Kempo is a dangerious martial art incorporating some viscious throws, joint locking/breaking techniques. I doubt again they would teach a 9 year old .

Karate ( what style btw?) , TKD seem like the best options. I think TKD is probably the best for a kid of such a young age. If he trains hard he'll probably be able to achieve his black belt in 5 years by then he'll be around 14/15 so he can make a more informed decision about taking a different martial art when he's more knowledgeable or even keep going to reach new heights.

    Good luck.

I have trained in martial arts for years before i got ill.

Ive done shotokan karate, tae kwon do both ITF and WTF styles, ju jitsu, a few styles of kung fu, BJJ, boxing and lastly thai-boxing.

For fitness or effectiveness get him into boxing or thai-boxing cant beat these two stand up arts.

But since he is young getting him into anything keeping him active will be good so i say tae kwon do or karate.

I'd say go with Tai Chi Kung Fu. it requires concentration and hardwork to master.
