Its much better than what people are getting up to with nulled versions of both scripts someone just pointed me out to. It looks like you can be the best business person on the planet but won't stop those scum. At least the owner of phpld appears to do something about this as many of the warez sites I looked at had been shut down.

    Lessons learned heh.

I started reading this thread because I like hearing opinions. I soon found myself sloshing through a flaming contest but did learn a couple interesting tidbits.

I spent considerable time trying to evaluate various scripts before choosing. Evaluation based on the free versions is not that great but buying a full license for each is expensive. Phplynx has a good idea there.

I found that initial cost can sometimes be just the beginning as plugins/modules can cost much more than the initial license. Found it funny that one advertised all those free plugins but to get them required a subscription to the download site.

I ended up with eSyndicat and am not unhappy. I have a couple small issues but not a big thing. The theming/template system isn't all that hard to deal with.

Guess what template gave birth to www.CeramicArtsIndex.us. Must get back to populating it. Their forum isn't all that great but...

Actually every one I looked at had strong and weak points. The thing that finally 'sealed the deal' was the flexibility offered through the 'block' system.

    Hi Harkster

Well as you know, with the pro version license, all plugins are free.
And as for the original template, "Glassy"
You would never know it. Great job. :)
How could this be improved? Post here or at the chat forum at eSyndiCat.

The plugin cost was another script.

Shucks, didn't think the Glassy would come up right off the bat.

Need to spend a couple days populating and then do some promotion.

Just what I need; another project. Just bought WineIndex.us. Just saw this http://bbdirectory.com/ -- WOW

Will comment on forum later. --promise--

BTW, is very easy to move content left, right or center with 1 or 2 sidebars. Would like to tackle writing a custom from scratch but... Wanted to shout to the world when I hit on moving user block above sidebars.

Did you ever get around to actually trying the full version Harkster? Its a lot different from the free version. Anyhow, good luck, regardless of what script you use, its not about that its about success for the end user who in turn will make the directory industry a better place than it is now.

I will honestly say I didn't. Been a while and don't quite remember why - may have been testing burnout/need to get moving thing.

The key was blocks functionality. I am almost obsessive about looking different. On the back burner is WineIndex.us so and possibly a local business directory for Northwest Missouri (bunch of small towns and rural area). So...

You might want to have a chat with Gary on that one day, you can do just about anything with the design and implementation. I think you might be pleasantly surprised. :)

    Hi
Wow, It's really great to positive feedbacks about our software.

Harkster All the plugins are free. No need to subscribe or do anything else. If you have any problems with their downloads you can contact me via email and I will fix everything for you.

BTW, this link can be useful for others:
    http://www.esyndicat.com/product/plugins.html

More plugins will be released this week.
PayPerClick, USA/UK zip code distance search

I can say most problems our customers have occur because of incorrect installation. For say we have common problems like banners/news display. people simply forget to copy necessary files in templates, etc. We have taken in account these problems and in our 3.0 version we implemented the better way to install plugins :)

BTW, 2.2.04 works fine on IIS (ISAPIRewrite) and PHP 5.2.

Anyway, you're welcome on esyndicat forums if you have any questions regarding esyndicat software

P.S. we are planning to release another version of our Omega version. We have been working on it during past year and it seems it's the most stable version we ever had :)

All the credit to you and your team, Simon!

Back in 2006 when I've bought my unlimited license I wasn't quite impressed with eSyndicat to be honest. Now it's just... wow!

You guys did a great job there...keep up the good work!

I would like to remind everyone that this thread is about eSyndicat. If you want to discuss other directory software do it in another thread.

I don't see a problem comparing to other scripts when talking about a particular one.

Nothing wrong with comparing scripts. In this case the OP asked about eSyndicat v's phpLD and instead got a flame war rather than a reasonable discussion of the pros and cons of each from people who have tried or who use, eSyndicat and phpLD.

i think that the thread got outta hand just about after page 1... :p
but I did get a feeling that both are good software..
since it is when comparing 2 good software that takes a differet approach that we usually have a flame war going on.. both believe that their software is a good.. while at the same time fail to understand that what they use can be good even if others are just as good...

    Hi,

I use eSyndicate for a whole host of sites not just for directories. The new version is really great. Half the battle with scripts I find is picking the right hosting company.

Anyway I just started my first proper web directory. (Latest version)

The guys are really helpful on the forums but they don't provide support at weekends which seems to irritate some users and if they are upgrading to a new version then support can be slow but overall its an excellent product and well worth the fee.

Just thought I'd give some balanced views. :)

I've tried it, and I think it's not bad but I prefer phpLD. ;) I just prefer phpLD's admin panel. But it's definitely up to taste. eSyndiCat is pretty cool too.
