I was just thinking about something, do image alt tags count for keywords?

I mean when Google looks at my site and finds alt tags will it count them as keywords on my page?

They will be counted for sure in Google Images.
In my opinion it should help a little bit in Google SERP as well.

alt is not a tag but an attribute. alt attributes used to be quite important a while ago...the barely make any difference today.

Definately helps with google image search and also helps with SERP's
some seo pro's even say it is used in the place of anchor text and i belive this!
Otherwise how will google count them if you think about it...

So they count, just not as much as real text?

zexy hit the nail right on the head - and remember, they're attributes, not tags. (The best way to see if a piece of x/HTML code is a tag or not is if it is surrounded by < and > - seriously.)

The value of alt tags have been drastically devalued...but yes it is better to have them than to not.

For the last time, they're attributes, not tags. Come on people, how many times do I have to say this?

actually main use of the alt attribute is optimizing your image in google and also you can put your keyword for increasing your density so it is defiantly help to get ranking on SERPS
