President elections in Lebanon parlament. Who will be a president ? And will president be able to avoid another civil war ? Edit : Update : Lebanon's Suleiman set to become president BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanon's parliament gathered on Sunday to elect army chief Michel Suleiman as head of state, reviving paralyzed state institutions after an 18-month standoff between a U.S.-backed cabinet and the Hezbollah-led opposition. http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUSL2450102720080525?feedType=RSS&feedName=topNews
Hezbolla got what it wants and if it decideds to foolishly start another war against isreal, this time it will be responsible for even more lebanese casualties then before. It all depends on if iran gives it the command or not. Lebanon is now directly under syrias and irans control, not the lebanese people
Im just hopin git becomes center with no influences from any countries, but now thats impossible. This was a calculated move to first assasinate all those parliamentary pro government people then get hezbolla the right of veto. In essence syria and iran now control lebanons foreign policy. Those of you saying saniora was supported by the west now understand how wrong you were. Like i said, there is no oil in lebanon, and i was right that saniora only wanted a free lebanon for all lebanese. God help the lebanese if hezbolla starts another war on isreal, now all of lebanon is free pickens to be attacked
A source for the parliamnetary assasinations? Hold i'm sure i can get that with a simple google search as i have seen on lbc the news everytime another government member was picked off, and notice throughout this span of time not one pro hezbolla or pro syria member of government was assasinated, but yet again the pro hezbolla people here dont even comment on that. they just call anyone that doesnt agree with hezbolla a pro zionist, the same way the pro iraq war people call anyone that doesnt agree with the iraq war anti american.
I don't really care it is just nobody would believe without a source, i want to learn more about the situation
All latest events show that Hezbollah is famouse in Lebanon, and Lebanon ppls supporting Hezbollah. Now Hezbollah has right for Veto. I wish Hezbollah Luck
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/updates/syria_04-26-05.html syrian army leaves lebanon. Sorry Ziya they are famous for giving up lebanese soverignty to iran and souria, they have teh right to veto thanks to syria and iran, and please show me facts about whether they are the majority or not in lebanon. Now here come the facts: All these assassinations occured because of 2 key things: the harriri tribunal, and the fact that these people were voicing concerns about syrias continued involvment in lebanese affairs. Now you can also wonder about hezbollas security network in the lebanese airport with the most security being at the part of the airport where government officials land and take off from their private jets June 2, 2005: Samir Qassir Hawi, a longtime leader of the Lebanese Communist party and lifelong activist on behalf of Lebanese autonomy and the Palestinian cause, was killed along with his driver by a bomb placed under his car. He was opposed to Syrian interference in Lebanese affairs, but also well known for his thoughtful and dialogic approach to political issues. December 12, 2005: Gibran Tueni Tueni was the publisher of Lebanese daily newspaper an-Nahar and a member of Parliament when he was killed by a car bomb in 2005. He was well-known for his 2000 "Open Letter" to Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, in which he criticized Syrian interference. November 21, 2006: Pierre Gemayel Maronite Christian parliamentarian Gemayel was stopped in his car and shot at close range by several gunmen. His murder took place in the midst of a standoff between lawmakers calling for the UN tribunal to investigate Hariri's assassination and Syrian-allied members, led by Hezballah, seeking to block it. March 14 bloc party members accused Syria of the assassination. June 13, 2007: Walid Eido Anti-Syrian parliamentarian Eido was killed when his booby trapped car exploded. The blast also killed his son, two bodyguards and six others. September 19, 2007: Antoine Ghanem Ghanem was an MP affiliated with the Christian Phalange party associated with the March 14 bloc—a collection of parties united by their opposition to Syrian involvement in Syria. His assassination came a few days before parliament was set to begin deciding a new president, and his assassination, on the heels of those of other anti-Syrian MPs, was seen by many as an effort to affect the election in favor of the incumbent pro-Syrian president's bloc. January 25, 2008: Wissam Eid A car bomb killed Eid, a police investigator working to collect evidence to explain Hariri's and others' assassinations.
After the latest Hezbollah coup there's a good chance that the Christian, Sunni and Druze militias will rearm. The Druze gave a good account of themselves in the Battle of Mount Lebanon despite facing thousands of Hezbollah and Iranian Revolutionary guards. Ironically Hezbollah took the upperhabd by moving 12,000 fighters north from Southern Lebanon to supplement the 5000 hezbollah in south Beriut. This was possible because the UN has 10,000 troops in southern Lebanon and is in effect defending the Shia villiages.
the battle in the druze mountains was being compared around inner circles in lebanon to the 300 spartan battle. You are correct in that the other lebanese have not forgotten the way hezbolla humiliated them, but the scary part is that the sunni lebanese were humiliated the most. Hezbolla doesnt want them to turn go crazy. They would like them when they go crazy. On the general aoun forum they are calling anyone who doesnt stand with them or hezbolla a zionist spy for isreal lol. What a load of grabage. Only way this is resolved is if hezbolla finds a way to give their weapons up to the government. The common shia people in lebanon are some of the most nice and down to earth people. The hezbolla movement doesnt represent the whole shia population.
I do not know from where you get your info, specially the info related to the military wing of Hizballah, as I know, their fighters are around 2000 but I m not sure because the military wing is surrounded with secret. I would appreciate it if you included your sources, so I know we are discussing real news not rumors.
The official number is 2000 but in actuality even bogarts numbers are way too small. In reality no one knows the exact number but regular shiite people in the south serve part time in the hezbolla army and receive special training the same way isreali citizens receive their training because its mandatory to serve in the isreali defense forces. if you consider this it dwarfs bogarts numbers. Why do you think hariris forces and the druze lebanese only fought a defensive war and not offensive. It isnt just hezbollas advanced weaponry, its their numerical advantage. Its a society within a society. Do you think they offer free medical and help with reconstruction and recieve nothing in return? True they have their own economy but that economy is dwarfed by iranian economic and military aid and access to those weapons by the many roads allowed through syria. Do you think they had hafez assads statue at their checkpoints because they loved the guy? Both hezbolla and the assads had differing political idealogies but have common interests. If given the chance syria would betray hezbolla at the snap of a finger if it meant them getting the golan back. As much as i dont agree with the way they have terrorized the lebanese society, hafez assad was on eof the greatest if not the greatest arab leader in the middle east. He was the ultimate opportunist and ultimate pragmatist. Assad served on the allied forces in operation desert storm(surprise), but he was given a prize by george bush senior that few know about today. Secretary state baker met with president assad shortly before operation desert storm, and the very next day after baker left syria assad was given the green light to attack and invade lebanon, and guess who was opposing him back then? Thats right the weasel flip-flop king general aoun who barely escaped being killed and whisked away to france. The very same general aoun who is now allied with syria and hezbolla. Fun and games, thats all it is in lebanon to these people, fun and games. Believe me if there was oil in lebanon america would be there in a heartbeat and this is why i never believed some of the people here who said saniora was allied with america and isreal. Of all the leaders in lebanon saniora if given the chance to govern freely could have turned lebanon around, but he was pressured from all sides by aoun, hezbolla , syria and iran and eventually lebanon has lost the power to govern itself. Its now a proxy nation. Before operation desert storm, america gave lebanon to syria as a neat little prize, now hezbolla and aoun have given lebanon up to iran and syria as yet another nice gift. Its being passed around every 10 years like a street prostitute.
Sheik Hassan Nasrallah warned Suleiman today against any efforts to disarm Hezbollah. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080526/ap_on_re_mi_ea/lebanon;_ylt=Auy3pwhYRjia4v7xYZ.a2QVvaA8F
Even though isreal isnt even in the south, hezbolla will never disarm, why should they. If they disagree with anything march 14th says or anyone else for that matter they will just call them zionist spies and do what they want anyways.
