Why purchase a domain & hosting together, why not seperately?

If you're just starting out, Godaddy could be an option if you want both together.

Godaddy could be right for you, Dotster & domain.com are also good for this.

There are a lot of web hosts that give you a free domain. I would not use this as one of your criteria in choosing a web host. What kind of site are you planning on starting up?

1&1 offers both domain name and hosting packages and believe, there are too much lies behind those horror stories that people spread because you can cancel your hosting package anytime without losing your domain names, it's all about reading the knowledge base and visiting http://cancel.1and1.com

However I would better recommend get hosted on www.servage.net, they give you a free domain for a lifetime and its price and features are unbeatable.

I have been hosted for three years now and I have never been required to renew my domain, as they said free, however I have no idea what might occur with your domain if you cancel your hosting, not willing to do it in my case ;)

Hosting company's free domain is not free.

There're tons of good web hosting companies that offer free web hosting packages along with free domain names: BlueHost, HostMonster, Hostgator, LunarPages - are some of my favourite web hosts. (yes, I do have account with all of them as I need various IP hosting for SEO & local business purpose).

In case you need detail reviews, I would recommend:
http://www.webhostinggeeks.com, http://www.10-cheapwebhosting.com/, http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com ...though these websites are affiliated with some of the hosting companies and their reviews are somewhat biased. ;)

I know a service where you can get a domain name for free for the life time when you buy a subscription of hosting package for year. This is only for $50. PM for details.

I wouldn't prefer registering domain with "hosting companies" but you should register domains with reputable domain companies. So if you're really looking for domain+hosting, I suggest you go with Godaddy since I've heard good things about their hosting services + they're a reputable domain company. :)
