Just want to ask, what is the better URL among these two below:

http://example.com/category/post1.htm

or

http://example.com/post1.htm

Does Google identifies the pages inside /category/ as duplicate pages?

Everytime a different URL is displayed in the browser bar it's considered a seperate web page. I would go with the second URL example.

If you want to add more keywords in the category part then go for it.

I would go for:

http://example.com/post1.htm
Code (markup):

With your first question, it's going to depend - are you categorizing your posts, or not? (I always do, but I use the category name instead of the word "category" in my sites.)

As for your second question, the page that is seen to have less "authority" will be the one flagged as a duplicate (yes, this is a double-edged sword).

I personally prefer the former, but do understand that it's not appropriate for all circumstances.

I think, second will be better provided category word is no way relevant to the post url. I mean /sony_2260_vsi_review is alot better than /node/sony_2260_vsi_review but the best is /sony/sony_2260_vsi_review or /review/sony_2260_vsi_review

Not sure what do u mean bythe duplicate thing :)

Dan Schulz,
I saw your post on sitepoint, about the plugins you suggested for wordpress, and you suggested to include the category-base-killer plugin. I'm also categorizing my posts and I use category names instead of the word "category". Please suggest if I should include the category name on the URL? (should I use category-base-killer plugin or not?)

Thanks.

If's it's eccomererce related website and having so many categories on the website,

Than it's always good to use category name before any post, it will helpful for your website visitors, that in which category they are surfing easily from the url name itself.

keep in mind, you are making websites for real human visitors not for search engine spiders.
