Australian authorities have started the controversial killing of about 400 kangaroos on the outskirts of Australia's capital of Canberra, animal rights activists said Monday. The Defense Department said last week it would begin killing the eastern gray kangaroos at the abandoned military site outside Canberra after a proposal to truck them to remote forest land proved too costly. Authorities say the overabundant kangaroos are crowding out other native species, but many animal rights activists are against the killing of Australia's beloved national symbol. Scientists point out that eastern gray kangaroos are abundant and destroying the native grassland habitat of threatened species such as the grassland earless dragon lizard, striped legless lizard, golden sun moth and perunga grasshopper. European settlers built Australia's cattle and sheep industries on grass seed imported from Britain, and native grassland, which is imperative for some species, is now rare. In some parts of Australia, it can only be found in old cemeteries where livestock never grazed. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,356667,00.html
I hope they make cute purses out of their scrotums! http://www.australiagift.com/sale/scrotum_1.htm ooo Or maybe a bottle opener! http://www.univenter.com/p_kangaroo_scrotum_bottle_opener.html
Well, your local fast-food burger joint will have some cheap meat. Wasn't it carls jr. that was found using roo meat before?
It is incredibly sad news, I feel so bad for the Kangaroos. I don't agree with the killing, although in Australian authorities credit, they are trying to minimize their suffering as much as possible. First they are tranquilizing them, then they are giving them a lethal injection. I still wish they would not kill the kangaroos.
Lizards are ugly, kangaroos are cute. Screw the lizards, let the Kangaroos live! J/K, maybe they can sell Kangaroo hunting licenses and use the cash to further preservation efforts.
I was going to say the same thing. The trouble with animal rights protesters is they are generally only concerned with the rights of animals which have once appeared on an Athena poster. Four species are in danger of becoming extinct and they are worried about a few hundred, cuddly, fluffy, cute kangaroos.
Austraila has 50 million Kangaroos and 7 million are harvested per year for meat. The harvesting of wild kangaroos is more green than either beef or sheep ranching.
if (roos->cuteness > lizards->cuteness) { let_roos_live(); } else { kill_puppie_dogs(); kill_bunny_rabbits(); outlaw_rainbows(); vote_for_hillary(); } Code (markup):
Now I'm curious, I wonder if it just "tastes like chicken"? Since they are wild, it will probably be gamey, but sometimes gamey can be good.
