HELP - Why is BUYING Links SO BAD?

    Guys (and Gals)
I really do not understand why buying links is BAD?

I realize that on large sites or via large brokers Google may KNOW that the link has been purchased, and therefore disqualify it... or worse.

BUt what if it is from a small person here on DP with a high PR site? For example, the owner of this site: http://dssc.org/ told me they could sell me a link.

Would it be all that bad?

It is the " Buying " in the statement. If you are doing it for PR and link juice, you are effectively trying to manipulate the rankings, which Google does not want.

It is not that bad if you purchase links carefully.

Google is selling links, I am sure it does not want to many sites to have a share in its pie.

WEll lets be honest. SEO is all about manipulating the rankings.

    I should've reprased my post.

I am just wondering why is it so frowned upon by US -- the SEO people? I realize GOOGLE might not like it, but is it really a bad way of SEO or a necessary evil? If its done with someone small on DP, is it really bad?

I'm not sure whether the owner of the "small" site will like his URL being posted here.....

By that logic, If I kill just one person, is it really bad? I mean, I only killed one person, will anyone really notice? :)

Whether or not we think buying links is bad, we pretty much have to play by Google's rules here.

If we buy links, sometime it can bomb the google result of relevance.

Is buying links something most people DO but do not talk about?

Does it USUALLY go bad or does it usually work out?

Not all people do that. Since buying links can manipulate PR, it is frowned upon by Google.

It is bad because somebody may report you to Google, and you don't want that.
