Welcome to my first post. :)

I would had added a poll but I don't see that option, maybe someone can add it.

If SEO is the most important thing in building your website, which is better, Joomla 1.5 or WordPress and why?

Or does it not matter at all. Is it totally up to the web developer / author.

I know I'm new but I could learn a lot from this discussion I think. If you'll tell us WHY. :)

    Thanks,

    Rusty

well depends on the speed, seo friendly urls, lighter..
i have used Joomla and also Wordpress ..
After using Joomla for some minutes ..i was confused by its admin panel and lots of options.. its not really easy for a beginner :)

I am using wordpress for my site : www.coolestgadgets.net

And Wordpress is easier for a newbie and also it has Seo friendly urls (through permalink).

I would recommend Wordpress for a beginner :)

Neither. The scripts are only as good as the person who's using them. (And no, I'm not joking.)

I've used both. Have been tinkering on the web for a long time. As far back as Fidonet. :)

But I still consider myself an armature.

I find it hard to believe that it doesn't matter at all.

Would love to see some detailed discussion on this. I'm certain it would help many of us in ways far beyond these scripts alone. Earlier version of Joomla seem to rank low and I would say artificially low based on my limited knowledge. Joomla 1.5 seems better suited for SEO to me, again my limited knowledge. The blog style options for Joomla 1.5 seem like they would provide slightly better for SEO.

If it were possible to have to sites setup exactly the same with with similar domain names and not get penalized for duplicate content, one done with Joomla and one with WordPress it would be interesting to see what happened. I doubt they would be the same.

I know enough to know that is is about content and you either have to know what your writing about, be very creative if you don't know what your writing about or pay someone that does know what they are talking about or are creative enough to fake it and make it really appear they know about it. I don't underestimate the search engines.

It appears difficult to me for one person to write enough to provide the content needed for many areas of the web.

Hopefully someone has some time to really go into this. Newcity's comment about the permalinks seems somewhat accurate but I think, I'm creating the same effect by smart use of Joomla's section and category tools. Am I mistaken?

Link Baiting seems probably to be one of the best things one can do with either program but since I'm not a programmer that is hard to do. I really need to learn how to write something useful that other people will want. From there I could generate traffic for other sites. But I don't have that option at this time. So what do I do to improve my rankings while I acquire the real knowledge that I need?

    Again, thanks for the help.

I've only been using WordPress for a few months now and I'm ranking better with it. Also, I've been avoiding the sandtrap which surprises me. I wish I could figure out what I'm doing to avoid the sandbox.

I'm combining both Joomla and Wordpress. Joomla for the main site and Wordpress for blogging.

Wordpress is better on my opinion because there are more SEO plug-ins and because of pingbacks etc

I find that WordPress is the best for me, Joomla's too chunky.

Wordpress is better out of the box, and is easier to work with. Both can be seo'd on page nicely with work.
