Changing the age from 16 to 18 to get a drivers license to save gas and resources

I think it would be a good idea to change the driving age from 16 to 18 years of age to be able to get a drivers license. I believe it would cut down on pollution, save oil resources, cut down on accidents, and maybe insurance rates.

I see no reason for teens to be driving, (yes there are exceptions, but…) if they are actually working they could ride the bus or their parents can take them. Let me know what you think about doing this.

I have a job, and I need to drive to work because both of my parents work and there is no bus service in my town let alone any other transit. I would definitely say that is a horrible idea.

 

People here in the UK need to be 16 to ride a scooter, 17 to drive a car or motorcycle and 21 to drive a truck or bus. I think that's about right.

 

I do not agree with this. When I am 17(I'm 14 now), I will be starting college. I won't turn 18 until after I start, so how will I get to my classes, unless I take the bus? I would much rather prefer driving my own car.

What good will it do? The mom still has to drive her kids everywhere anyway, making it a very big inconvinience for her. Not to mention STILL burning gas, pollution and accidents.

Mom does what ever, kid drives himself

I did not know you had a stepped system over there, how long has that been in place, and does that work well?

 

Horrible idea in my opinion... people are saying, kids get jobs and if this is the case, it will be hard because of not be able to drive to their job.

Also activities outside of school and sports? What about that? What if their parents work?

 

Valid points, where I live I don't see many teens with jobs anymore, and the local government has been trying to push us into mass transit and onto bicycles for years, and so I have been interested in how people felt about it.

 

Works pretty well, but there are still a few problems. I mean a 17 year old could pass their motorcycle test on a 50cc banger and then head out on the motorway on a 300cc superbike - not ideal.

 

Thats right, when your 16 you aren't still holding onto mommy and daddy's pant legs.


lol. why don't we just raise it to 21. If you can't even be trusted to drink until 21 why should they trust you to drive? I would have killed myself if I didn't get my license at 16.

 

I agree with your idea. Many young people die on the street. If only they drive at older age, maybe they will stay alive by now.

 

We're all going to be burnt away by time it takes any drastic effect on our lives anyway.

 

I wonder if being older would make them a safer and mature driver, or just an older immature and unsafe driver?

*Saves Money
*You can walk,ride etc etc which keeps you in shape
*Helps the environment

1st of all, what's the % of drivers that age? if it's < = 2.887319423986% then your ? is moot!

 

I'm going to get my permit in 3 months, and I have many reasons why I need to drive.

1. My dad has to take off work early every other day to pick me up and take me to soccer. He loses money from not being at work + gas money taking me there.

2. Visit my mom.

3. Actually be able to hang out with friends more often.

Here's three reasons why I shouldn't get it and just walk or ride my bike everywhere.

1. I won't pollute the air more.

2. I'll find out who my real friends are, because the real ones will actually come and pick me up, thereby polluting the air the same amount I would bey driving.

3. I won't be pressured into getting a "real" job other than freelance writing because I won't be able to get myself there.

Obviously, the pros outweigh the cons here.

 

I always wondered the logic in this country. 16 to drive 18 to vote and smoke and 21 to drink. You should be 18 for everything in my opinion. Also for CDL drivers that do interstate trucking you have to be 21 before you can do that. So anybody in the US that ever thought about driving a tractor trailer over the road then you have to be 21 to do it. As for buses and what not I understand not having buses around I don't. The closest Wal Mart to me is a half hour drive. So around here I can see if there is kids needing to drive.

The thing here is this junior license program they have. You have to pass all your classes and you are only allowed out at certain times of day. I ain't sure about how it works I'm 24 myself so I'm long out of school. I also drove tractor trailers over the road so that's how I know the 21 rule.

 

This would not cut down on gas or resources at all. The 16 year olds will still do the same amount of things... they just wont be doing it for themselves.

However, I am down for a switch of driving age and drinking age. Drink at 16 and drive at 21. I wouldnt care one bit...
