Currently, I have a site with Powweb. It's OK, but I'd like to know what web hosting companies you guys think are exceptional and don't cost an arm and a leg. I'm looking at building a social networking site, so the web host would need to be generous with usage. Right now, this is what I have with Powweb: 1,500 GB Disk Space 15,000 GB of Data Transfer FREE Domain Host Unlimited Domains MySQL, PHP, CGI SSL, FTP, Stats Point & Click Site Builder $80 in Yahoo & Google Ads Credits E-Commerce Included FrontPage/Dreamweaver ready 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee www.powweb.com Give me your reviews of web hosting companies you think are worth looking at. Thanks in advance.
HostGator is fantastic, imo. I use them to host 15-16 sites and I've never experienced any downtime. I'm using the baby package right now ($9.95 per month) and it has yet to let me down.
There's a company I've been with for YEARS with no problems: Netrillium (live links and signatures are not available to me yet), so just Google them.
You should go with iwhic, freddy or cameron. Go to the webhosting section of Dp here: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/forumdisplay.php?f=98 and make a thread that you want web hosting. I'm sure they will reply with offers. When they do, tell them I recommended you those three companies, and whoever you choose I'm sure they will take good care of you and give you the best offers best of luck.
I've been very happy with Lunarpages for over a year now with 12 sites hosted on my shared plan. How much traffic are you assuming with your social network site?
Well, x10hosting.com premium packages are GREAT. However, I have come to warn you of globat.com EXTREMELY SLOW BAD SUPPORT THEY EVEN BILL YOU FOR THINKS THEY 'THINK' YOU WANT do not ever use globat.com
The odds are... you will need a VPS and possibly later on a dedicated server -_- but i sorry to say.. you wont go anywhere unless you have some sort of new niche ;p
Hostgator for sure, cant go wrong with unlimited domains. On the same note, I'd like to say 1&1 can burn in hell
I am using hostGator for my forum (on sig). So far its upto the speed. I am happy and would recommend.
I've used Godaddy, Applied-I and about 7 other hosts and for the most part, I was disappointed to furious with the service they provided. I never tried hostgator, but I heard a lot of bad things about them, but that was a while back and maybe they have changed? Godaddy could have been good, but PHP isn't handled by Apache (phpsuex) at Godaddy and .htaccess would not work for many things I had to have because of not using Apache handlers. This was the only bad thing about Godaddy. Everyone else sucked. Downtimes, screwing with my dedicated IP ( still pissed about that one), slow sites because of too many hosts on one server, tech support that never emailed back, you name it. The most important thing I recommend to people for choosing a host is get one with phone support and call their tech support BEFORE you buy. Don't press 1 to go to sales, press the number for tech support and see how long you're on hold or if they answer. Tech support for when things DO go wrong, is crucial!! Bluehost is by far the best host I've ever used. Unlimited storage and unlimited bandwidth for $7.95 a month. And I get to host unlimited domains too. The Bluehost link in my sig will take you to them. They really are great. I host every site, but one with them and I will continue to use them. But BLuehost also has pretty excellent tech support that will help you and know what they're doing. I have never been disappointed with Bluehost and if you have your domains there too, you get FREE private whois.
When you get a host that offers terabytes of disk space and bandwidth, they are clearly overselling. Ask yourself about the cost of a hard drive, if they will need a couple of harddrives just for your few $, how many years or DECADES will they need to be profitable from your account?? I would stay away from oversellers and look for web hosting companies that have a proven track in terms of server reliability and customer support. If you are a small business owner and not much knowledgeable in IT, it is even better to find someone who is within reach in your location, you pay more but at least when there are some critical issues you are able to pick up the phone or drive by to talk with someone who can get it resolved.
I don't bealive hostings that offer clients a bunch of space that you can't use... When you use lots of space, they figure out a way to kick you out... That's sad!
I've used Powweb but I left and am happier with other companies like v7n, hostgator, bluehost, lunarpages. I would avoid globat and a2b2 / vaserv as I had huge problems with each of them.
Be careful of those huge oversellers. There are some oversellers out there that do manage their servers very well and keep their servers in good shape. There are also those others that are constantly plagued with downtime etc because of overloaded servers. Depending on how big you grow you may need to look into a vps or something like a dedicated down the line. John
exactly why I am a Bluehost customer for 7 years now. Each account is limited CPU and RAM so if a greedy site is on the same server, their site goes down and not yours. And I do like the unlimited storage and bandwidth of BlueHost. 1 site I host on BLuehost by itself because at 35K unique with 20 page views per visitor and a gallery, WP, 10 crons per hour and over 70K pages, 200 remote call scripts, it needs its own account, but it's still $6.95 a month for unlimited bandwidth and storage. I think we have nearly a TB of images on that server now.
