Beware of SocialEngine - a social network script, a MUST NOT purchase!

While FREE scripts like Elgg ( elgg.org ), Boonex Dolphin, Joomla Groupvibes or Drupal OG
are MORE FULL of feature, needs less of your time to tweak, have more plugins and more cheaper
(and better) developers as well as support real HUGE sites some people seem to be more
attracted to purchase a paid script.
While phpfox and dzoic are there, there recenly has been socialengine with apprent better
good looks BUT serious lack of functions and expansibility AND CRAZY PRICING

    Social Engine has these :
    - Profile commenting is buggy !
    - Posters cannot preview or edit what they post
    - You pay a base price of $300 as license for which you get nothing except the profile page
Now say you need Social groups - you pay $40, and you want to add user blogs you pay another $40.
You want users to have forum pay another $40
    http://www.socialengine.net/order.php

Thus for the very basic things the price adds upto $560
Now they admit that their forum is inadequate and suggest you to have VBB forum, so then if you
need forum you add the VBB price to $560 + $200 ( ?or more)
Moreover you may need to pay developers extra for routine things that do not work.

Compare this to phpfox / dzoic $300 to $349
or even compare this to VBB with social profile + VBB blogs or IBB with social profile + IBB blogs -
much less than even phpfox or dzoic and hugely better supported.

Moreover, SocialEngine does not have any inbuild video plugins and many essential features.
So do not tell you were not warned :)

Socialengine is a ripoff. I've never read a positive thing about it. Their pricing is way out in left field, too.

for anyone trying to build a community i recommend Drupal, theming is the only issue that might need to shell out some money for.

I for my part stick to Dzoic Handshakes :) Great for a social network, and even though it costs some money, you can make it up with membership fees, aff links or the like.

    Good luck!
