I'm really surprised that only one person has mentioned "quality content". Really, backlinks mean nothing if you've got junk content which doesn't generate returning traffic.

Be original! That way people will link to you themselves and provide you backlinks. Don't be afraid if you don't see success at first, wait a while if you need. Once again, most important thing is to be original and to respect the google webmaster policies and guidelines.

I've submitted to over 200 free directories my self (and paid some guy on DP to susposedly submit to over 1000) yet I have only ONE backlink from a directory. Does it just take a really long time to register?

 

Where are you getting the information that you only have one backlink from directories? Google doesn't report all of the links you really have so your number will be less then it really is. However if you submitted to 1,200 directories you should have more then one backlink.

 

Focus on content for your visitors, submit to directories, build relationships/links, and much more I'm sure.

in the end there is alot of ways to get higher pr in fast way but in the end PR isnt everything actully pr is nothing just keep the good working on ur great content and u will find that ur pr is going higher with out doing alot of work cuz as i said ppl love to link to good content and u could offer free tools so ppl could use them
