Hello, I have just hired a freelance programmer to do some work for me to network a java game so players can play over the internet. Before he begins working, I would like to have an idea about how the game's server would be hosted. The game's server most likely would be a simple java server for the game that the players would connect to. I am wondering if perhaps I could get away without purchasing a dedicated server just yet. I am looking for a host who might have some extra space on their server and is willing to run a java game server on it. US based would be optimal but I am really open to anything. I forgot to say that I will also need mysql for some small tables to keep track of the wins and losses. Thank you, John
your going to need a good server. I have a java game and 1000 people online = 40% cpu usage & 1.5gb ram. I have a dual harper town 2.0ghz 4gb ram 320gb hard drive 100mbs connection.
I may be able to provide you with what you need as i am aquiring a new powerful server this week. Please PM me with your requirements and ill give you a reasonable/affordable quote. Regards, Edward Tobia Administrator/Founder EuroSRV Hosting Solutions http://www.eurosrv.com
Indeed it does depend! But a dedicated server is always an wise option for these kind of games... Maybe start out with a VPS when your brand new
If you have enough money to afford the ded. server then yes, that is the best route, but perhaps you would be find a good VPS or semi-dedicated server package. Are there any other special apps/software packages that you need that might require Windows as an OS?
Well, if your Java software only uses a database you don't need a dedicated host since the "server" only needs to host the database and i'[m sure your host can handle more than one concurrent connection at a time. But then again, without seeing how it's coded i can't say what kind of configuration you need.
