How do you go about marketing on forums without spamming?

    After you get in good on the message board, you can send someone a private message telling them about your website. Don't spam, though.

    I won't recommend that, sending someone unsolicited PM can get you in trouble especially if they forward it to the mods.

    Well, it works really well if you have a good reputation on a message board. Plus, if you've "chatted" with the person before, it's easier to pull off a veiled advertisement.

    I use my sites links in signature section on various forums. And if my site/blog has something helpful for the discussion that is going on, don't hesitate to refer my site link there

    As other people have said above, your signature is really the best place to keep links in most forums. The main idea in forums is to build relationships with people and to interact with the community. So depending on where your target market is, participate in forums based around them and interact and build relationships with those people. People buy people and not things, so building relationships is definitely the way to go.
