It has been 2 weeks since this cyclone hit. The government of Myanmar, by not acting proactively, by blocking aid, has essentially contributed to the deaths of what is probably a population in excess of 100,000 and these totals will surely rise as the status continues.

The reaction of the Chinese stands in stark contrast, as their own government forces have rushed thousands into the earthquake area to help and try and save lives, and in a further unprecidented move for the Chinese are bringing in foreign aid rescuers to assist with the effort to help people stricken by the earthquake.

But the situation in Myanmar is painful and without precedent. It would have been dramatically easy to let in aid workers.

    Its just horrendous.

2 million people face starvation. But the Burmese government is more interested in hording aid to feed their troops and dependents than helping the victims.

In Myanmar, there isn't a lot of work, so either you become a monk or become a soldier, Thats why they have 400k of them. But if 2 million victims are killed for the inaction, the military junta should be bought to court for crimes against humanity.

Many of the inhabitants of the Irrawaddy Delta hit by the cylone are christian Karen ethnic minorities that the government has been fighting since 1949. It's more than likely that the burmese military junta is discriminating against the Karen.

Karen is a minority there, still the majority of the victims will be the Burmese, I think the military junta does not care about life, either burmese or karen, as long as they have an iron grip on power.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon is traveling to Burma this week. Lets hope it gets aid moving to the cyclone victims.

I do not place much hope in that. The military junta is impervious to outside pressure.

The military junta realizes that there is a lot of international outcry. It's in their interest not to isolate themselves and face possible sanction on their regime. But I agree that it's going to be a hard sell for the UN on this one.

It is a no go because Ban does not carry a stick with him. The junta knows that whatever the UN is going to decide, nothing will over ride a Chinese veto. So they will just arrange Ban to go on a tour to a few of their model camps and send him back to New York.

I am from BUrma and I still love my country because people are still innocent
and it deeply hurts me to see all the suffering and pains going on.

Cyclone victims, have no where to stay and getting no aids.

    Aids Junta claimed:

    1- to their pockets
    2. - repackaged with their junta logo and give tot hose who agree to vote for them

    sad thing is
they even give to take pictures and TAKE BACK the goods/aids the next day!

and junta also kicked out people staying in monasteries and sent them back to the flooded areas. :(

and what are the chances that Junta's supplied boats carrying cyclone victims to the city SINK every single time they transport? poor survivors, survive cycloner but murdered by junta's trap.

i dont wish to bring politics to bring in aids but Junta Than Shwe and fmaily are living with MANY $ and they also dug up almost all jades, jewels, and stones and sell them for themselves. Not sharing any for the citizens.

also you may not have heard but Than Shwe believes he thought he was reincarnation of our king "A Laung Pa Ya" and since in history, "Kyan Sit Tha" became King after A Laung, THAN SHWE wedded his 50 years old wife to ACTOR of Kyan Sit Tha Historical movie recently!!!!!!!!!!

Forget sending in Carter, he probably would be scared to go there. Lets send in Obama and hilary and see which one can do anything and give that candidate the democrat candidacy.

I would say Hilary would be the one most suitable, given her remarks about Iran, she might just go there and say the same thing to the Junta. Difference is the Junta is quite scare of US forces. That is why they move their capital inland.

Some threats and saber rattling might just do the trick to wake up the generals.

It looks like the UN is getting the situation sorted out and Burma is accepting aid.

Ban got a promise that the military lift their Ban on the aid workers. But till now the workers remained Banned from going into Burma, it is really an empty promise.

Myanmar's junta has a bad history of breaking promises to top U.N. envoys. We will have to see what happens.

There's thousands of tons of aid on Fremch and US warships that are sorely needed and the junta refuses the ships permission to unload their cargo.

They want a bribe of $11 billion first before they will let anyone come in I guess. Really fascinating story, you have to pay a country's leaders so as to help its citizens. Seemed like we are begging to help them rather than the other way round.

This is a complete waste on time. There are others out there more worthy of this (?)

IMHO, these survivors are innocent and we should try our best to help them, they are already among the most improvised country in the world.

It is a waste of time taking to the Junta, I guess more can be accomplished using force.
