Rather then asking someone to link to you on your homepage you link an inner page or the other way around. Rather then buying a link on someones homepage you could buy it on an inner page which is what a deep link is. Example... Instead of linking to www.mydomain.com you'd like to www.mydomain.com/article1 -Scott
It's a good idea when you're building backlinks to get at least 20-30% deep links as well. It makes the link building process look more natural and your site will be indexed better.

if everyone is only linking to your homepage then something is wrong, or you dont have great content on your inner pages.... so, when building backlinks.... try to get some of your backlinks to your inner pages..... I usually aim for a 75% homepage and 25% inner pages split..... You can also create deep links on your own... i started a whole internal link building series on my blog:
