I bought a new tower and it has AMD chip and 1 GB DDR2 RAM. It has Vista basic. I heard vista is a RAM hog, so far my old computer now has 256 ram and runs smooth with XP (sometimes gets slow) Should I just put the XP on this new tower? opinions? I'm thinking Vista will eat most of the ram of this computer, so XP would actually run really smooth on this.
No...keep Vista......buy more RAM.....most PCs now have at least 2GB.....you must have opted to keep the price low. My Dell tower has 2GB of RAM.....and it runs great.
But why should I buy more ram to accomdate Vista, when XP works perfectly fine with 256 ram? Edit: I'm looking at my sisters laptop with vista, appears it has alot of special effects. Thats probably why its a ram hog. XP doens't have much bells and whistles like that so runs pretty good on 256 ram. So would run excellent on 1 gig ram...
The thing is that if you run all the fanciful things in Vista such as the Aero interface, animations and Microsoft Defender, it would show down your system. When you get your computer, just switch all those off or disable them and you get a smooth running machine which should easily match the performance of your XP. You do not really need another RAM if you do not want the extra fluff. As to how to turn all those off, just search Google for Vista Tweaks and follow the steps recommended and you be fine. You can easily run with 1gb RAM which I am doing. Stick a thumbdrive and enable Readyboost to improve the disk caching. Actually the memory management model of Vista is different from that of XP. Vista model is closer to that of Linux where it would pre-allocate all existing RAM although it does not mean that the RAM would be fully used until needed. If you are familiar with the Linux memory management then you will understand that of Vista. See http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1931914,00.asp
You can turn off the special effects on Vista. I recommend you install XP on your new tower or purchase more RAM.
You'll need 2 gb to use Vista properly although you can wade through it even at 512mb. But XP is much more comfortable than vista.
well I got my tower running, using it right now. Vista looks good. Its running fast. But I know this is becuase the box is new. Eventually it will probably get sluggish as it ages.
1 GB RAM?? Nowadays u shud be gettin 3-4 GB RAM...and yeah..put XP on it, until Vista doesnt get a bit better hehe
I have Vista Basic on a tower system that has 1GB of RAM and it runs very good. I upgraded about two months ago and so far it has never crashed. I can run Windows Media player, Photoshop CS2 and IE7 all at the same time along with several messengers and I experience no lag. Its up to you though. I run Vista fine and this system is nearly three years old.
if you are in love with VISTA due to its beauty keep it, buy 1 GB More RAM, it will run like concord aircraft if you cant buy new RAM go for XP XP will run fast on it, And yeah since VISTA is a just released few months ago... many softwares / games are not yet compatible with it... so see what will best suite for u.... go with that
after hearing a lot of negative hype about vista i was hesitant to buy it until i stumbled on a great sale one day..bought vista home premium with 2 gigs ram and it runs quite well--much faster than my xp which only had 512 megs...however, a friend of mine said vista was quite slow at 1 gigs...just one more anecdote to help inform your decision.
Yes I am liking vista it is refreshing and quite different. But With just the OS running, my 1 gig ram turns into about 300-380 remaining ram. So it is in fact eating half my ram. I think XP would run with probably 100MB or ram.
This statement was true a year ago. Now Vista is 1.5 years old and has a SP too. And 99% of software products works on Vista.
And not even with this amount of RAM you can do something for any Vista version, I told you this by experience so I downgraded to XP and still waiting to master all the changes required to run properly WIN98SE instead.
