Can they ask me to give up my rights?

    Hi,

I recently noticed that a company that hosts forum modifications had this in its terms of submission:

Can they legally do that? I mean, surely I shouldn't have to give up my right to redistribute my own work?

I would be very grateful for opinions :)

Read carefully what they say "However, this means that the modifications listed here cannot be distributed elsewhere without express and explicit written permission from (This Person)."

They are not saying (This Person) cannot distribute elsewhere. They are saying that no one can copy from them and distribute elsewhere without your (This Person) permission.

Or at leas that's the way I read it. :)

Is there more to the document, something which perhaps defines "This Person" specifically?

"This Person" is an administrator of their site. The policy applies when I am submitting my own source code to the forum :)

    lol

It's your work, you can put it wherever you want and redistribute it.

Oh... I see now... you were modifying the text in order to protect the guilty.

It's easier to read in the original: http://www.fmods.com/index.php?act=boardrules

I would never submit anything to these yahoos.

Unless there's a law specifically banning that, they legally can. While you can
believe you shouldn't have to give up your right to redistribute your own work,
the forum owners can also feel they shouldn't have to let you in their property
if you do not agree to their terms.

If you decide to force the issue, will it be worth the costs?

Lol, yeah, teach me to be nice.

I don't plan on submitting my source to them, I was just interested as to whether they were within the law in asking this.

    Thanks for your help (+rep)

They can put whatever conditions they want on submissions to their website. If you submit to their site then you agree to their terms.
