Can a site recover from a Google penalty?

If your site was penalized, but not to the point of getting banned, but dropped lower in the search results. Lets say you were on page 2 and they dropped you to page 5. Could the site recover from that penalty and eventually climb back to 2?

Link building will help it back up the serps. I assume that's the only way.

Yes, it's easily done. A very highly ranked competitor in my market got a penalty earlier this year for various reasons - mostly mass theme sponsorships, paid links everywhere, you name it;) - and the penalty seemed to disappear overnight about 2 months later, and they're back to where they once were.

Of course, in 2 weeks I was back from a -50 penalty, but you have to resolve the reason of this penalty first.

I submitted a article for one of my sites to a blog network service on DP. Over 500 + Blogs.

My site dropped from 2 to 5 on the keyword i was trying to get to page 1. I only submitted 1 article to the blog network service so do you think i was penalized for duplicate articles? It's only been about 2 weeks since i used the service.

Removing the spam elements and quality link building with targeted keywords will help you recover from Google penalty

It's not a penalty, because a penalty affects the whole site, and you lose your rank for all keyword not only for one. It must be a coincidence, someone over ranked you

If such think can penalize a site, then people will start to do this for their competitors.

I suggest you get some backlinks from high PR pages.

    YESSSSSSSSSSSS!

My website listed anywhere from nr 2-nr6 on the first page for some keywords and low and behold, i got email from google saying it was banned for 30 days for using hidden keywords. I corrected the problem, 30 days later, came back with only 3 indexed pages, and now, Its back to what it was.

In your case, I think your competition is gaining. I used to dominate some keywords and now my competition is getting Pr5 and Pr6 and I have no chance with my old techniques.

    I use simple method.
When i see that something is wrong, I just remove the changes that i made as they were before.
    It works for me.

It would be nice to know what the penalty is and how you can resolve it from Google though.

Removing things that maybe made Google angry (like keyword stuffing) usually works, but it needs some time.

I have a similar issue with my site and I am waiting to see if I recover, else I will fill the reconsideration form.

    It can definitely recover.

Most sites do unless they get poor traffic.

The amount of poor information here is astounding.

    Penalty = BAN

    Everything else is a FILTER

You can recover by doing things with quality in mind and not using silly recommendations like spamming an article to 500 article directories, posting comments on 500 blogs and forums or building 1,000 links in a week.

    Quality + Time = Success

Shortcuts as with most things in life = Failure

Theres some filter for sure. If site a = 30% of current backlink total < 30 days, = spam filter. Then some dampening things like age and pr of new links id guess, percentage of new links with same anchor, lol. Opens up for sabotage imo.

Google forgives, just try to figure out what the penalty was about and if you can fix it, you will recover
