What else is the best free virus scanner out there? If none of the free ones are reliable, then which is the least expensive?

Are you sure AVG will not be free? That will be a big problem. Will surely have to look at some other good options! :(

If avg is no longer going to be free,it obviously shows the customer base has grown to be substantial enough for them to make it paid. Which ultimately should be good news for customers. Think about it..
once its a paid product they'll have to keep quality/improve service and one can only hope-value.

so long as the price for it is not astronomical but reasonable.

    my 2c worth.

I got a pop up a few days ago to update to the paid version because there won't be updates for AVG Free after the 25th. I'm not sure what I'll use after that either. :[

I got the same message after my routine update asking me to update to 8.0 and when I tried to do that they asked me to pay for it. Then some where along, I saw AVG saying that they won't be free from next month onwards.

I had a message asking me to update to AVG 8, after I did that, the updates continue to be free.

I have heard that kaspersky is good. If AVG becomes paid, I will switch to it. :)

I find it hard to believe they'd get rid of the free version.

I prefer Norton. I got a copy of Norton Security Suite for only $90 AUD... So I guess that's not too expensive for what you get.

I thought AVG stopped advertising and distributing the free version ages ago. For the people potentially looking for an alternative, I would recommend Comodo.

Clamwin is also a good free one, but it doesn't have a progress bar, it just scans and you have to let it run its course.

If I remember correctly Clamwin has no real time protection, Comodo is a great choice though. But AVG 8 still seemed free for me. I will continue using AVG 8 until they really stop the updates and start charging.

Or you can support the time and effort it takes to create the programs and pay a tiny fee ;P
But hey, who am I to talk, I prefer free too :B Who doesn't? :D

I don't use clamwin either way, but it's the only real alternative I know... plus I've never liked AVG.
