If I find an image on google images can I download it, upload to my server and use it? Or if that is not allowed can I 'copy image location' and do it like that? Any any of these two ways allowed or could I get sued for copyright using both methods?
only if they are in public domain. most of the time the pictures are copyrighted. you can't use them.
how can you know this info though just from google images? Can I link to the source? Does that make it legal
Both uploading and "copy image location" usually doesn't pursue for a legal demand. Tips: Mostly tutorials and guides are copyrighted
I have a question. I have noticed that there are lots of sites and blogs which have same images on a common story.
No, you cannot use google images unless you get express permission from the copyright holder. If you don't know this information, don't use them. The vast majority of photos (well over 99%) are not in the public domain. You can purchase photos for about a $1 via istockphoto or similar sites.
No. The images are not yours. You need express permission. A link back does nothing to give you usage rights unless the copyright holder tells you those are the terms of using one of their images.
But I wonder about the truth because I ever studied law of copyright. It mentioned that every picture published on the internet are considered as lose its copyright. Everyone can copy it. Anyway I forgot whether there is something I didn't study about it. Anyway It's not logic if it is legal to copy everything published on the internet.
You should pay attention to the license agreement of places like istockphoto. These licenses often have great restrictions regarding what you can do with photos you buy from them. It's a very common myth that content over the internet has no copyright protection. These apply also to text, audio, design etc.
don't do it...don't copy...And for God sakes don't do a hot link...then you are stealing their bandwidth on top of it...even if everyone on the world is doing it...and you are also making it very easy for them to catch you... don't follow suit...if they hit you with a copyright violation..."everybody else is doing it" ain't gonna be a defense...even if it is true... You are correct, many are violating copyright...I would encourage you to read a few posts on this forum in the legal section...you may not get caught...but then again...you may...and if you do...it is gonna be expensive...
Look, A lot of people do lot of copy/paste and none gets sued. The main thing is that if you site becomes popular one then chances are there that you can be sued but that will take some tile and till then you can put a disclaimer on your site that if anyone have any objection regarding copywrite or any other thing then they can contact you. I think this will help till certain extend.
OK thanks for all the info from everyone... Does anyone know of any sites related to movies or sports that would be willing to allow me to use images? For free or a small monthly fee.
You need to make sure that you get the images from the real or actual owner of the images who may charge you good amount of money. You can also Google for this if you like.
