This is so true. Although it should be done by private citizens, not government.

It's a shame that we (humans) don't have our own apparatus for doing this. I guess that is what happens when you are dependent on the state. If the state refuses to act, you are powerless.

WT, do you recommend making a donation to the Red Cross?

I will donate but I am quite skeptical of how much will really reach the victims. Still, it is better than doing nothing at all.....

I'm only halfway through but this is an excellent analysis of the issue from a strategic point of view, using examples from history to show why we should probably stay out

I mean, China just had a massive earthquake - they always had masses of starving people. Should we invade them, too? I love trade, I want to work with the world and exchange goods and ideas, but our military & public officials shouldn't be working anywhere they haven't specifically been invited to.

The best that will result is a situation like Dafur.

There's a big difference between Iraq and Burma.

Iraq under Sadaam was invading neighboring states as well as gasing his own people.

Burma is relatively peaceful and they do not go about blowing up themselves or others.

Why not turn the ships back here and all the fuel required to get there by giving the proceeds to the Midwest right now. Let the ASEAN countries take care of their own hemisphere.

A military invasion will only worsen the problems of the poor people.

The immediate need is for aid. The local countries should use their influence to eventually make Maynamar a democracy.

Who's going to force the US to be a democracy if forcing democracy is such a great thing?

Nothing could worsen the plight of the victims in Myanmar, they need aid but aid is taken by the military, they need medicine and health care, but Myanmar aging military could not provide for such access, the rural regions suffered and no media is there to cover.

1.5 million are the estimated casualties, I don't see anything could be worse than that. Defeating the antiqued and demoralized Burma military would be just lifting a finger for the major powers.

I am fast at typing, I will stay at the main camp doing all the tons and tons of paper work working myself to death......

Maybe we can send a scammer there, if they manage to scam the military junta out of the country, we do not need to waste a bullet.

Post in the services section, "Help wanted in conquering third world nation" :D

Seriously what we need is a forceful diplomat who can coerce the Junta into letting in all foreign aid and rescue personnel without any restrictions. Even a threat of invasion by a powerful country will do.

This is exactly where a forceful demoncat like jimmy carter could do his best work. Isn't this one of hussein obama's great traits - to conference and shmooz over fine wine and cheese with dictators.

Where's Jimmy Carter when the world could really use him.

The situation in Burma is getting worse. The cyclone devestated Burma's 'rice bowl' as well as rice stores. Burma was a net exporter last year but will not be self sufficient for a number of years. At a time of escalating rice prices and a world wide rice shortage, the burmese military are hording international aid in order to feed the army as well as militatry dependents.

Rather than invade I believe airdrops of food would be a better solution. Hopefully some of it would get into the hands of the people that need it.
