Well I have a question about internal linking.

So what is the difference between URL page linking( link a pages url inside a website) and text anchor?Isn't it the same?

If you have a site with 1000's of pages how can you write original content for each page? It would take months

    Hi Sweetfunny,

Great Post. I can now see so many possibilities for my website after reading your post.

One question; How do you pick up a long tail keyword that is worthwhile? Inventory.overture.com doesnt seem to work anymore.

I have figured out some long tail keywords for my site that have 900,000 competition but top sites are not just well optimized.

Also Do you use some content generation engine for page contents?

The site i demonstrated in this thread was an Ecommerce site, and while a did rework a lot of content i also pulled a bit of a trick. I implemented a customer review and voting system underneath each product.

Visitors to the site can leave comments and reviews about the product, this created a lot of unique material (and still is every day) which adds to the long-tail keywords. Not only that, the updates to the pages promote crawling due to additional content being added.

Think about all the content on DP, how much has Shawn written? Not much, user generated content can be very powerful. ;)

I really don't use keyword tools, they are just too inaccurate and can lead to a lot of optimization for the wrong terms. When you have ranked #1 for a few hundred terms these tools suggest and realize your getting 300 visits a day when they are saying 10,000 you quickly loose faith in them.

I use server data because it's more accurate, if your pulling 50 visits a day from Google for a term when your on page 5 logic says it's going to pull big numbers if you land it in the top 5 results.

Here's a few hours data from a page i threw up when i was experimenting with Google Trends and Blog Search the other week. After i got this initial data, i went back and tweaked the page based on this.

    http://www.tareeinternet.com/stimulus.txt

The page was obviously about the Stimulus Check, and people would obviously optimize for this term however i didn't. The top 10 has .gov's, CNN, Digg etc and as you can see, a lot of people are searching with the "When will i get my" phrase in their query instead so i catered to it.

Much easier to rank for, i hit the front page of Google for a bunch of long-tails within an hour of posting. Then after 48 hours i'd had 4,500 organic uniques to the page for my collective long tails for a page that took literally 2 minutes to make, probably more traffic than the #1 for "Stimulus Check" because people weren't searching for that, they wanted to know "When will i get my" instead.

Sometimes you have to step out of your SEO shoes and look at things from the people searching instead.

    Hope that helps. ;)

if you want to target long tail keywords you should look at Hexatrack.com - it is a small script that is placed in your code and it monitors long tail keywords that your site is showing up in the search engines for without you even trying, then you can actually target that keyword and most of the time dominate the phrase or keyword.

Automated tools either create duplicate content, or badly re-written content that doesn't make sense.

It's not really something you want to use to make a quality site, these are used by people to spin pages for MFA's and even then they don't work that well. Nobody wants to naturally link to them, and they just cost you more money in buying links or trying to trick the search engines in to ranking them.

Make good pages, people link and you rank. ;)

The Title gives you the most bang for your buck on-page, so i would definitely modify the script to make them definable on a page by page basis.

Having duplicate Titles that are not related to the pages content will really hurt your SEO.

Can you explain this a bit further? Did you just threw up a page with some random text containing sentences that you expected to rank?

How did you make the page rank? Did you use an excellent domain, so you were sure you page ranked ok from the beginning?

I know it's longtail, but still takes a week or two before my long tail keywords start to rank. That's why I'm asking where you put your page.

    Thanks, Mads

For long tailed phrases I suggest using http://www.ezinearticles.com. At the moment I'm currently writing articles for long phrases about gambling and leaving the sig with my link at the bottom. EzineArticles rank you front page very easily for even fairly competetive key words.

Ok, with that particular page (it's not related to the site in this thread) i was mucking around with the QDF algo (Query Deserves Freshness).

I went to Google Trends and scanned the Top 100 hottest search terms looking for a topic closely related to the sites niche. There was several for Stimulus Tax Checks, perfect. So i knocked together a page in a few minutes about the topic and i used the exact phrases in the article that were listed in Google Trends.

Hit publish and pinged Google Blog Search and searched my Title and in 2 minutes i was #1 in Blog Search. After 5 minutes i was listed as a result in Google Trends for 2 of the Stimulus entries like on this page then 9 Minutes later i was in regular SERP's.

I got instant traffic from Blog Search and Google Trends, shortly after from regular SERP hits.

After a few hours i had the data listed in my text file above, so i went back to the article and expanded on it as well as slightly tweaked my original to take advantage of the data i had.

The result, slightly over 4,500 unique hits to the page in 48 hours.

I didn't social bookmark the page, get back links to it or promote it in any way whatsoever and all the hits came from those 3 Google sources.

I should start charging you people money if i keep giving away my tricks. ;)

    Hi Sweetfunny,

I used a different approach to find long tail keywords. Being a google adwords advertiser gives me access to google keyword tool. I entered a keyword related to my industry. Google listed down a number of keywords, their competition and search volume. I picked the keywords with no competition and little search volume. Then I searched for those long tail keyword in google.com and shortlisted the longtail keywords that had competition of less then 500,000.

What do you think about this approach?

    Hi Sweetfunny,

I tried to use Google Trends to find relevant long tail keywords but all of the top 100 terms are just noise.

    Am I missing something?

You must be, these are currently the hottest searched terms on the internet so i'd hardly call them "noise". For instance right now we have stuff like:

blame it on the rain lyrics (great for music blog or site)
california gay marriage (great for legal sites)
california supreme court (same as above)
2007 cricket world cup (great for sports site)
anna nicole smith (celeb blog or site)
fantasia on american idol (celeb and music site)
highest paid ceo (webmaster or business site)
csi season finale (TV and Entertainment niche)

And so on, why do you think these terms are noise?

Lets take the No 1 hottest term, "Blame it on the rain lyrics" and Click It. Lets take the first listed there under blog posts which is: http://www.x-2.us/hotsheet and he published the page 2 hours ago.

Lets Google Blog Search Blame it on the rain lyrics

Look at that, he's #1 on Google Blog Search.

Lets Google the regular SERP's for blame it on the rain lyrics and what do you know, top 20 on a 2 hour old blog post beating out a ton of established lyrics sites who have had their pages online for a while and have Pagerank.

So he's #1 in Google Blog Search, #1 entry under Google Trends for the currently hottest searched term on the net as well as top #20 all on a 2 hour old page.

I guarantee he's getting a ton of long-tail if his page is lengthy as makes use of good keywords.

Ok, correction he's scraping the top Google Trends Feed and his page was totally automated, he's probably in bed sleeping and will wake up with more traffic then most people here get on established pages.

    Still think it's "noise"?

Thanks mads, much appreciated for the rep the other day.
