If this is actually a true story, I dont blame the kid. He is passionate about his site, and isn't ready to sell it. Mark Zuckerburg, the owner of facebook has gotten offers that have breached $1 billion, does that make him insane? He doesnt want to sell the site because it has sentimental value to it. There are tons of business owners out there who are more interested in their business than selling it to someone else. But then again everyone has their price...

I guess at 17 either he is not mature enough to realize the value of money or he somehow thinks there will be better offers. LOL I would take much less than £8.5m. If he only gets £30,000 a year from his website, he should be happy to sell it for 5-10x his annual income. I would take £300,000 in a heartbeat and use that money to design 5 other websites just as good, pay others to help with the web design. Wow he could have been set for life and not only that but let his family retire too! I will laugh and pity him when in a few years his traffic is a fraction of what it was and no one even wants his site anymore! The same story has happened to many dot coms during the bust and is still happening now. I remember someone having a site called y2k dot com that had offers for around a million back in 1999, he refused the deal and now no one cares about it anymore and its value is probably no more than $10,000(im being generous due to the small AD income)

After reading the other replies, how do we even know this offer was legit? The kid could have paid some news reporter to set it up so itll make the news and get his site more publicy. Very clever set up, me thinks. I for one would be glad to pay someone $$$$$$$$$ to make up a news story about any of my website(s) thatll get me more traffic.

No doubt he's raping the news to increase the price (or atleast attempt it). I think his website is garbage. Nothing is working right and his forum only has 189 members. I think his entire story is bogus.

However, since it made the news, his site is now worth $$$ instead of the junk pile it seems to be at the moment just because so many people are visiting it.

Should have sold. $8,000,000 USD / $5,000 per month (his revenue) = 1,600 months (133 years). This is why I think the story is bullsh!t because anyone with any hint of logic would be able to see that this is the deal of a lifetime for this site.

Hmmm, so what has happened 12 months on?

The website now redirects to a dubious DVD rental service.

Should have taken the money and ran when he had the chance, if the offer was a real one that is...

It was earning a good £2500+ every month for him , and increasing as the months go by. I wouldn't have sold it at that price. But I guess he did as it's just redirecting to another site now.

Wow thats amazing. All saying that he should have sold but maybe he likes his site and would rather just keep it why sell something thats doing well, but on the other hand he is sitting on a gold mine and like someone said hits the news and gets people talking about which causes a stir and more traffic.............he is just bidding time he will sell when the time is right.

I think that we should actually admire the kid for not selling it and showing that there shouldn't be a price tag on your passion.

I think the kid made the right choice.

Why pull out when you have the potential to make more money then your being offered.

If companies are offering that much, they see potential to make more money.

If he continues to have success, he should make much more in the long run.

    Smart kid!!

Yeah but Mark turned down the offers at a time when he knew he was set for life, there's not much lifestyle difference between $1bn and $10bn, so when you're already set for life financially, doing something you love and enjoy becomes much more of a priority.

Nick, doesn't have the same financial security. Personally I would sell and spend the money on the bunch of other ideas I have, but that's because I'm an ideas person and it would drive me insane to be focused on one thing for so long. I guess he isn't.
He really needs to sort out his image though, he looks like a 31 year old father of 2 who works in IT...
