Dr Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, has sparked a political storm by calling for aspects of Sharia law to be adopted in Britain. Dr Williams said it "seems inevitable" that elements of Islamic law, such as divorce proceedings, would be incorporated into British law. Dr Williams said the UK had to "face up to the fact" that some citizens do not relate to the British legal system, and argued that officially sanctioning Sharia law would improve community relations. .... "But there are ways of looking at marital disputes, for example, which provide an alternative to the divorce courts as we understand them." ... Dr Williams's comments were welcomed by Mohammed Shafiq, the director of the Ramadhan Foundation, who said: "Sharia law for civil matters is something which has been introduced in some western countries with much success." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1577928/Archbishop-Williams-sparks-Sharia-law-row.html http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7236174.stm http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/yourview/1577935/Is-sharia-law-in-Britain-"unavoidable".html
What's with all these islam/uk posts on dp all of a sudden? Truth is, not many people really care about religion in the UK, so noone gives a toss about what he thinks of the legal system. What's more, islam is an extremely sexist religion, especially by UK standards, which is why his remarks were so criticised... how can a religion which treats women so unfairly have a good legal system.
That is not true, Islam gives more rights to women than any other system in the world. Why do women earn roughly 40% less in the UK and USA than men? Seems sexist to me. The Jews in the UK have their own legal system so I don't see why Muslims shouldn't
According to the official UK government statistics, the female hourly pay gap was 12.6% difference in 2007. Not 40% so I don't know where you're getting your information from. Obviously any gender pay gap is too much, but it's constantly improving. In the UK, it's illegal to discriminate against women in the workplace and men and women have exactly the same rights (infact women have more rights in certain areas of family law). Where as in islam: 1. Women are not allowed to work alongside men in a lot of islamic countries, they are therefore forced to work from home or not at all. 2. Women are not allowed to drive is certain islamic countries. 3. The hijab / jilbab are symbols of inequality in forms of clothing. How can you tell me that it's not sexist to enforce that women must cover their bodies but men are not put under the same scrutiny? It's practically definition of sexism. 4. Islamic men are allowed to have 4 wives at one time. (Sharia the Islamic Law - Dr. Abdur Rahman Doi - page 147 / Hanafi Law- Page 31) 5. Islamic men are allowed to beat their wife or wives. (Shafi'i Law# m.10.12 Page-541 & o.17.4 Page 619.) 6. Islamic women inherit half of what men do. (Sharia the Islamic Law - Dr. Abdur Rahman Doi - page 299.) If you call this 'more rights to women than any other system in the world' then it would lead me to believe that you've not travelled too far.
I don't care what happens in 'some islamic countries' that is their law, not Islamic law, are you telling me in the Quran it says women can't drive? lol. Women are given the Hijab for modesty and protection, if there is a rapist, and there are 2 girls who look the same standing outside a shop, one is wearing a skirt and small top and the other is wearing hijab, who is he going to rape?
Firstly, by that logic, they should be wearing kevlar vests incase there's someone with a gun, and a gas mask incase there's biological weapons. Secondly, in an islamic country where this 'rapist' happens to be lurking, where all the women are wearing the hijab, he's going to have no choice but to rape the hijab women - so your argument doesn't really make any sense as it's not protecting these women. Thirdly, why should only women need to be completely covered from head to toe to be considered 'modest'. Lastly, it wouldn't matter who the rapist goes after because The overwhelming majority of Muslim scholars believe that there is no punishment for a woman coerced into having sex. But I guess you're still going to sit there and type that islam gives 'more rights to women than any other system in the world'? You see, this is what scares me about religion, a person can have complete facts with information to the contrary of what they're indoctrinated with, and they will never agree with you due to their irrationality. It's pointless us even continuing this as I have facts and you have delusion, neither of us will accomplish anything.
Ok so explain this to me, why do almost all Muslim women in the UK wear hijab when they don't even have to? Because they want to, you can try and oppress us of our rights of being a Muslim but you will never stop us from being one.
You explain to me where you come to the assumption that 'almost all' muslim women in the UK do? All the 'muslim women' I saw on Saturday night were certainly not dressed in the hijab. They were drinking alcohol and dancing 'immodestly' with men who definitely didn't look like their husbands. But you know what, they were the happiest muslim women I've seen in a long time ;] Hey, if you want to live under a law which gives more rights to women than any other system, you know the one where you're not allowed to work alongside men, you are allowed to be beaten, men can rape you without punishment and you only inherit half of what a man does because you're a woman, then go ahead and become a mans forth wife, I'm not going to stop you.
