Check the Joomla Forums there are plenty of postings. Why someone would invest time creating a site and developing a site on a FREE template is beyond me. Find the template that works best for your project - free or otherwise.

It just doesn't make sense to force your work and the enormous amount of time and hours into a template that doesn't fit what you are doing. Templates are cheap.

And there are only a handful of well designed full featured templates that are free.

I understand that, this is just something I want to try for a while and then I will invest the money into a lot of things if I like the style and everything. I have not found templates paid or otherwise that I like...its hard to find them...some of the free ones are very easy to tweek to what I want...I am going to tweek it anyway with a personalized look so why would I pay 50 bucks or 100 dollars when im going to mess with it anyway.

When I was checking out Joomla, I think my favorite free and commercial templates were at JoomlaShack.

There are very few good free templates for Joomla 1.5. These are them:

    1) The 3 that come with the Joomla 1.5 installation, which were the winners of the J1.5 template competition. Of these, Beez is one the very few (free or commercial) Joomla templates that will give you a tableless site--except for the tables the odd module or component sticks in.

    2) Some of the other Joomla 1.5 template contest submissions. There are about 30 of these available at bestofjoomla and elsewhere. JoomlaPraise made a very nice entry which is available on their site and via BestofJoomla. The entry named 68Portal is very good and (like Beez) is a mostly semantically correct, tableless design with overrides for com_content and other coe components, modules, and plugins.

    3) Except for JoomlaShack's generous options, all the "free" templates from commercial providers that were not Joomla template contest entries are crap. (Bad graphics, bad colors, bad layout, weak menus, lots of tables.) I have seen no exceptions, except maybe a few from CMSLounge which are not exactly well built, but they look fairly good because they are basic and have only a few module positions.

You are better off buying a good template from one of the best providers if you are in a hurry. If you are not in a hurry, build one yourself based on the example of Beez, 68Portal, and the numerous free non-joomla html/css templates designed with semantically valid xhtml/css for use with any CMS. Or port a good Wordpress theme to Joomla.

    Hi,
Joomla is a great CMS… but something about me hates paying for templates. They’re not that hard to make if you know a little XHTML / CSS, it’s just a matter of knowing where to copy and paste a few Joomla specific elements. Though I will say that some do go above and beyond (like Yoo). Nice having all the best in one place though just in case, thanks for the article.
