Featured links can bring more traffic than general.

Featured links are a good idea in the sense that they sit above the rest in the category, usually have a surrounding to stand out more, they are harder to ignore, if for example theres 4 pages worth of links in a category then your featured will appear at the top (or near the top) of those 4 pages.

Also, depending on each individual directory the featured listing will often allow for submitting a page other than your homepage, may also come with additional deeplinks, and whatever else the owner decides to throw in for you, so yeah quite a good idea at times.

Featured links will only guarantee approval from most directories, and as for SEO, it has no difference with general links.

Nobody will submit to directories for traffic, and even dmoz.org will not give a link good traffic!

It is good for the directory owner. JK. Actually, I've heard somewhere that more juice passes to the higher up links on a page.

    You are 100% wrong.
Featured links stay on top... and on all the pages of that category.. so more links. And whatever traffic the directory gets, featured links are more visible to the visitors. ;)

Dmoz dont have featured link option..:D

pipes and hotpop gave good information as featured links get you more exposure. And for backlinks purposes, the top page of the category can be indexed faster by the search engines.

As MeetHere noted, featured links do not guarantee approval and can bring more traffic. But most directories refund the fee if it is declined for any reason.

I usually don't buy the featured links because they don't clearly say the term. If it's yearly add "yearly" to the description.

I'm not going that far if it doesn't say it clearly. Spell out your terms if you're selling a product.

As a consumer I want to know the term. Basically I want it to say "Permanent" right to it so there's no confusion.

I notice some people do this already.

If the featured link costs you $10 a year and gives you 2 clicks a month its cheaper than adsense.

Thats a good point, the least that any directory owner should do is specify the term of the featured link, either next to the price or in the submission guidelines, rather than giving you the suprise on the payment page.

If you are looking to keep the cost down then a regular is better than nothing, if you think long term then a featured is the best option. A new directory may only have a few links in a category but in time the category may fill pushing your listings down and probably off the first page.

    Thanks Brian

All the points made thus far are great. I think there is one thing missing. It is also about offering submitters choices. If allows site owners some additional choices in placement of their listing.

    Hello...

    Well...

In most cases "Featured" offer a 1. thumbshot of your site where regular might only offer a link.
This has a 2. better click threw rate in most cases (depending on the directory) and if your site
is brand new and doesn't have PR yet then it 3. will automatically put your site above all others
irrelevant of their PR which would mean your link will be on that 4.main catagory page rather then page 6-10
or however many might be listed under that category.

    thx

I have bought a few Featured links, and here's why: I generally submit to Home >Society > Religion. If I buy a regular link, I must buy it on the Religion page, two clicks from the directory's home page. If I buy a Featured, I can buy it on the Society page, just one click from the directory's home page. The regular-link pages are almost always PR0. The main category pages (eligible for Featureds) usually have some PR and fewer links spreading out that PR effect.

Yes, Jim Is correct, most of the pages of directories are having PR 0.
You just need to have link from higher pr pages.
